There are a lot of threads here weighing the benefits of the MIM vs. MIA. Run a search to learn more. Bottom line, though, is that they are both good guitars and what matters is what sounds and feels good to you and what you can afford.

From what I know:

Body - Mostly, they are exact same, except that (possibly - not 100% sure) MIA's will be alloted more attractive grain patterns for non-solid finishes

Neck - Definitely not the same. MIA will have 22-frets, will be finshed, and other touches like hand-rolled frets, etc. MIM std necks are nice, though - but definitely not as nice as a MIA std.

I have both a MIM and a MIA. Of course I like the MIA better, but the MIM is also a great guitar. I use the MIM as my "workhorse", and it has served me well. I don't think you'd be disappointed with the MIM at all.

+1
my MIM was my main gig guitar for 11 years. It is a great standalone guitar.

hey Syeklops

you said that you have a mim right?
so is the body the same because i am looking for a thin guitar like the mia and was wondering if the body is exactly the same.

i played the mia and loved how thin it was the the thinness gave me that feel that i wanted in a guitar and love the feel on it

I don't have the exact measurements of the two guitars. Or if they are exactly the same. There are a lot of people in this forum who love to personally do modifications their guitars, as well as build guitars from parts. They could probably give you a better answer on that. And I'm sure someone will pop in here and give you some information.

As I've said before, I have a MIM and a MIA, and they both feel as comfortable to me. Where I feel the big difference, is in the neck, and not the body. I also hear a difference in sound (probably because of the higher quality of components and how the American Deluxe is set up).

You know the feel that you're looking for. You should get to a music shop that has both the MIM and the MIA, play them both, and see if the MIM has that feel that you're looking for. It won't cost you anything to try the two guitars in the music shop, and you'll know for sure if the MIM gives you that "feel" that you're looking for.

I can switch back and forth between my strats, and they BOTH feel very comfortable (how they fit against my body) to me. I just played my MIM twice this week, playing for about three hours each time (with other people), and the comfort of my MIM felt just fine.

Again.......the only way you'll be sure is to pick up each guitar, one after another and compare. You just might be pleasantly surprised with how comfortable the MIM body feels against your body.

Now I also have a Tele, and I can tell you for sure, that it's not as comfortable as the strats, but I have the tele for a whole different reason. I'm willing to sacrifice the comfort for the sound that it puts out.
