I just recently bought a fender standard stratocaster hss. I really don't know anything about humbucker pickups, and was wondering can I acheive that blues John Mayer type tone with humbucker pickups.

Sure, just use really heavy gauge strings and the neck pickup.

A Dumble amp would help too... :?

From what I know, John Mayer and most of the other bluesy strat players play on either the neck pickup or the combo of the neck and middle pickups, which is the "SS" part of your HSS. So, that should give you the tone you're after.

There are a lot of blues players who play on humbuckers, though. BB King, Albert King, Eric Clapton (in the early days and some now), the list goes on and on...

The humbucker was designed to 'buck the hum' and the result was a
warm and free of hum sounding PU.
It can be used for all sorts of music imo.

To get the John Mayer type of tone use the neck pick up on the guitar.
The players ability has a lot to do with the tone. Picking softly sometimes and picking hard makes a difference in the sound. John now uses the brand Two Rock amplifiers a lot of the time. They are very expensive at $10,000 each and he uses two for true stereo. I think it would be much more reasonable to use a Fender amp like a Hot Rod Deluxe or a Fender 65 Twin Reverb.

Any music ever written can be played on humbuckers. Allman Brothers, Skynrd, A/C D/C, Beatles, Grateful Dead. Experiment Obi Wan

If you visit the thread "Guitars we want but cant afford" you will see a picture of an Alembic "Dire Wolf" which is modeled after Jerry's main guitar throughout the '70s and it is equipped with Humbucker and Single coil pickups much like Jerry's was so like an earlier post wrote you can play prettymuch anything with them. The only reason I give that example is I think most folks associate humbuckers with heavier styles of music 8)

Both singles and humbuckers were designed before rock became overdriven and high gain. The only reason for the humbucker, as was mentioned above, was to eliminate hum. I guess you'd have to say they were designed for the music of their time which was 50 years ago. I'd say both designs held up well since they've been used in every type of music since.
