After debating whether to buy one for a while, I finally caved and bought myself my first strat to see what all the fuss is about. The guitar itself is great but I’m having a bit of trouble with the tremolo bar.

I want to have it set so the bar is tight enough to stay put but can still be moved when needed. However, I can only tighten the bar a few times before it gets stuck on the tone knob and needs to be pulled up and over to continue. Is there anyway around this? I’ve tried placing a tension spring under the bar but this seems to makes little difference as it still hits the tone knob before its tight enough. Any help would be much appreciated!

Put a stronger tremolo arm tension spring with ball bearing .
Or plumber teflon tape

It could be that your trem block is too canted forward. What is the gap between the back of the trem plate and the body?

If you have put heavier gauge strings on the guitar than it was originally set up with (assuming it was ever set up at all) you need to increase the tension on the springs to compensate.

Is the bridge decked or floating?

Bend it! :) Seriously, after floating the trem at 1/8" between trem and body, I nearly always have to bend the arm to get it exactly how I want it on a new Strat. Not because Jimi did it; just because it works!

Cheers - Peter.

Seems like the OP is MIA but just in case he bounces back in... I did not have the same problem but I replaced the bridge with one that has stainless steel saddles and an adjustable push in trem arm. I really like it and it was only around $50 delivered from GuitarFetish.

I'm curious to know how chiplets69 has it set up too.
