We had a guitar donated to our shop today, (we do kid workshops where the learn to work on guitars and they get to take their guitar home with them when finished) , but I knew when I saw it later that something is up with this thing and I'm having a hard time figuring it out. At first I thought it was just a homemade deal then I started seeing signs of Fender. So I did what any sane person would do and took it apart. The Schecter trem that was put on it is actually quite a rare find nowadays and and was used on the Van Nuys Custom Schecters back from 79 to early 80s. At any rate any help with the body and neck would be great.

It is indeed a mystery. The stamps do indeed look Fendery, although almost nothing else in the pictures does.

The neck has obviously seen a great deal of action and wouldn't it be funny if it was an original 50's neck?

The body trem cavity looks like it was executed with a bread knife and has had the worst refinish in history. The shape of the routs, from what we can see, doesn't look like Fender to me.

I'm not sure about the neck being early.
It might be the camera angle, but the upper bout looks too small. It reminds me of the "atrophied" headstocks of the CBS/FMIC transitional period of the early 80s when the headstock was not built from the original pre-CBS drawings.
The body also has the notch in the side of the cavity for the grounding lug... it's not from the 50s or 60s.
I think it is early 80s.

You are right, not the unusual body ground. In '50 and '60 Fender may try different desing.

Could be a tinkered about with Fender "The Strat" from the early 1980s, with the finish stripped off.
The red in the neck pocket could be Candy Apple, and there is some red around the screw holes on the headstock.
The finish could well have been removed and a new waterslide decal applied.
The control knobs are brass, there's plenty of gold plate too.
The pickups are EMGs.
The tuners are correct for a "The Strat" too.

I think you are completely right. The headstock shape, the enlarged route for the tremelo, the volume and tone nobs are accurate and of course the candy apple red remnants. The thing has obviously been. for a serious lack of better term, "altered" over the years. Let's see if we can bring it back to it's glory.

Wow, stratmangler, that's a good catch. I'll agree with the body likely being from a "The STRAT" - the neck pocket even shows a bit of the gray(/silver) undercoat beneath the former CAR.

But IMHO, the headstock in that pic doesn't look exactly like it should. The ball end looks a bit too small, the truss rod plug too round, not long enough. And I see no paint remnants on the headstock.
Those shape differences could be just a perspective disillusion. But since the guitar has seen so much modding, and the parts are a mix/match of different styles, ages and even gold/other finishes, I'd keep open the possibility that the neck and body are originally from different (both Fender US) guitars.
I do not mean to diminish the guitar in any way with that - the mojo in it is unbelievable. Like, look at the plugged holes in the headstock, it seems it had both a FR and a Kahler nut at some point. And because of the mojo, I wouldn't try to "bring back glory" (since I feel it's already there), if that means restoring/repainting etc. IMHO a full checkup/setup, making it play at its peak, would suffice.

One note on the FRR+number stamps. That's Fender Rodgers Rhodes, and the number ID's the worker who inspected the neck/body. I haven't seen any official info of when they started and ended to use those, but my gut feeling says early-seventies to end-of-eighties. Anyone know for sure?

I was also thinking along the lines of The Strat body, with a 1982 Dan Smith neck.
A photo of the rear of the headstock with the tuners removed would show up any butchery.

It would also be good to see a shot of the rear of the headstock with the tuners in situ.
