I'm just got a CS Eric Clapton Strat and I'm extremely excited about it...I got the black paint job and I love it...though I am a bigger fan of David Gilmour...NOW, I was looking into EMG DG-20s to replace the current Noiseless Vintage PUs in this guitar...what do yous all think?? Good idea?

Ah this is going to be my simplified/buget version of Gilmours' Black Strat...and yes I realized that Fender is relasing his signature model in September ...just a little too expensive for me :-D

My question is that you've got a great guitar that your excited about, why change the pups right away? It's a sweet guitar, get to know it better before making changes.

+1 -- Yes. It has sweet pups. Are you that unhappy with them?

Well I do think I need to spend some more time with my current pickups but I've always been a fan of David Gilmours sound, espeically on the Momentary Lapse of Reason album...I like the thickness and the sound of his distortion...yeah I know the EMG pickups aren't going to give me all that...but I do think they'll be more sonically versatile...

I wish I could get two sound bites to help me make a decision...I mean EMG should have sound bites for these pickups

The new DG strat is not going to have those pups. Read the specs on the upcoming DG. 8) His red one might. :?:

The mid boost should give all the thickness you need. +25db, Ive got a £200 equalizer that only gives 15db's. I just put vintage noiseless and a clapton midboost in one of my strats. Ok i ditched the TBX for a standard tone control, but still its plenty versatile. Enough to sack my other guitars, including humbucker equipped ones, in favour of it.
Experimentation is the key to success with the whole of that setup.

Oh I know the black strat doesn't...but it has a custom 50's and a custom middle PU and then a SD SSL-5 or something like that...

His red on does in fact have the EMG PUs...I wish I could get input from people who have "upgraded" :-D

I think you'll probably be happiest if you wait until you know what you like and dislike about your guitar. Then, you can make changes to correct what you don't like.

Very curious thread. The EC is not a cheap Strat. Apart from the black paint, what made you buy that guitar? What is it you like about it?

Bear in mind, Dave Gilmour got many of his most famous sounds with regular low output single-coils - just like Clapton. He only went for the EMGs because of pickup hum as the Floyd's lighting rig got bigger and bigger. And there's other solutions to that now: which is why, as FHopkins pointed out, his new Sig doesn't go for the EMGs. Gilmour himself says he never really felt they sounded "Straty" enough - they were just a necessary solution to a problem at the time.

While we're about it, perhaps you don't like the neck on your EC either? Or the mid-boost? I guess all of those things could be changed...

Good god...I know the black strat never had EMGs...and I know that Gilmour said that it lost some of it's characteritic "strat" sound...I once had an 1995 American Standard Strat and I replaced them with 3 gold-lace PUs and I really loved the sound...now I know those are passive but I'm really hoping that the EMGs will help me get even more sounds out of my strat than the noiseless vintage...if they don't I'll pop my noiseless onces back in...

Can't I get some objective advice?? like...I've tried the EMG pickups...I like them a lot...or I've tried them and I hate them for this reason and this reason...or I like the Noiseless vintage pickups a lot...for this reason and this reason...

I just don't see the point of buying a signiture series guiter and changing it; I mean all the money/research for a specific axe for a specific sound; then you want to change it?
I know the whole world of guitar-ing is subjective; a personal choice thing and that's fine but why buy a Ford and put a Chevy engine in it? Why buy a Subaru when you need a back hoe?
If I could afford a CS guitar I wouldn't change it; but that's me. I have a EC strat; early 90s model I obtained new right from ( I was working at Music Mart in Fairbanks) the NAMM show; I changed the lace pickups for the vintage noiseless when EC changed his personal guitars; (I'm a EC fan) but I did keep the lace pickups...have had them in a MIK Squire Strat; took them out and sold the axe to a college kid over in Seattle who sold the body and kept the neck... more power to you all!

Well I guess if you think I'm trying to be exactly like DG I could change the neck dozens of times like he did

If all you want is opinions about those particular pups then do a search like Ceri (politely) told you to. There are sevaral threads about EMG pups that go into great detail on the pros and cons. Just do a search and you will be in EMG heaven. I don't think anyone is critizing you because you want to know some opinions. Good Luck. :)
