I have the Boss OS-2. It's both an overdrive AND a distortion. You can use it solely as overdrive, or solely as distortion, or mix the two effects, in various ways. I've been very happy with it.

Alright Mike, I'm sold on the Damage Control pedals after perusing their website, but I have to ask. The extra hundred you pay for a Womanizer over a Liquid Blues, do you get that much more?
I'm kind of digging the Liquid Blues, and I think it would be more my style, for blues, country, classic rock music. Basically bar standards. Am I wrong? Should I step up to the Womanizer?

Another good pedal to look into is the Fulltone OCD pedal. It's and overdrive/distortion pedal that doesn't mudden up your sound and still keeps all the nuances of the sound of your guitar. I own this and Robin Trower currently uses this to get his overdrive sound.

Boss SD-2 Dual overdrive. Totally underrated pedal. Cheap on eBay. And switchable with a SPST switch.

I'd say the Jim Dunlop Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face is a good choice. But go on it before you buy it and test if it cleans up when you roll down the volume on your guitar.
Ibanez Tube Screamers don't work on solid state amps. But I'd recommend one of them if you'd ever get a tube amp.

Try building our own fuzz face clone if your so inclined. I built one this weekend, Germanium transistors and what not, probably cost maybe $20 total and is nails the Jimi/Zeppelin/60's rock sound.

Digitech makes some really decent pedals. I have a Digitech "Grunge" and its a VERY heavy, overpowering overdrive. My friend also has a Digitech Tone Driver and Death Metal, and the Tone Driver sounds good for classic rock or just to have a good overdrive, although IMO, the Grunge sounds better than the Death Metal.

Dunlop also makes some good foot-pedal wah's. I got a used one and it works really good.

Completely sold on my burford electronics Mosquito.
everything from zztop roughboy to pseudo sitar sounds. Set the pedal controls on maximum as the control volume rather than fuzz levels, and use the guitar to control the sound. Its a very organic playing experience.

I have a Vox Satchurator on order:

Next I have to pick out a good fuzz pedal...
Either a fulltone Ultimate octave or Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz pedal.

I use a Keeley modded Sparkle Drive. Clean and dirty gain. The dirty side is based on the TS9 so it's really more overdrive than distortion, but it works for me.

The Fulltone Ultimate Octave is a fuzz pedal and an Octavia all in one. Use both effects together or one at a time so you don't have to buy an Octavia and then a fuzz. With the Octavia alone you can't turn the fuzz off and your stuck with it on all the time regardless of how much octave up you use. That's why Hendrix had both an Octavia and a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face seperate. Or better yet, get what I got Mike Fuller's Fulltone OCD Overdrive/Distortion pedal. This is what Trower used to get his overdrive out of his Strat.
