After about 30 years of acoustic, I finaly switched to electric this year. Was really wanting an HH but the time/price was right so got a HSS Stagemaster. Was thinking about swapping the neck singlecoil for a Seymour-Duncan Little'59 humbucker since would fit right in without routing away any wood. Can anyone tell what kind of improvement I would get after incvesting another $80 or so into it?

Also, someone had swapped out the stock black singlecoils for these green ones - don't know if it was a performance upgrade or they just liked the color - can't find them anywhere. Anyone have any ideas? My first electric was an Affinity model Squire Strat that I decided I didn't like so gave it to my son. If the green ones are better I'll just put them in his after I swap mine for the Little '59.

Well, for starters, I don't even know what that green thing is to compare it to. Is it another brand and model, or just a green pickup cover over the stock pickups? Impossible to say how a SD 59 will sound different if there's no reference point to how this unknown pickup currently sounds.

What I can say is that if you don't like the current pickup, there are probably specific things you don't like: too shrill? to noisy? no balls? volume too low? etc.

In general, there are a lot of great pickups by various companies that would make single-coil sized humbuckers for that. The SD Lil 59 is a great pickup, but has certains characteristics and tone that one person might love and another might hate.

If you need some reference point, listen to the sound clips here...

I hope that helps some.

I already have a Strat. Like it, but like my Stagemaster better. Doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement though.

Dgonz, that link was a god-send. It sure made comparisons a LOT easier. Thanks so much!

You seem quite knowlegable about pups...what do you think of this combo: for a 'bright' guitar (ash body, maple fingerboard), what about the S/D Duckbucker in the bridge position and Tex-Mex singles in the middle and neck? My music preferences are classic rock and blues.

Thanks in advance for yor input.

BJ

Sorry, I was out of town for a few days.

That sounds like a good combo. Some general comments...

- ash body and maple neck: great choice, alder body would be good too. the maple necks can have a little more brightness to them

- pickup combo is good. i tend to see the duckbuckers in the middle position though, since it's usually made for that 2 & 4 position to get that quack, so having it in the middle position might be more versatile for what it's made for. at least, that what seymour duncan tends to recommend and what i've seen others do as well. tex-mex are good ones, but i've had some friends that like the texas specials a little better. if you just mix the position of those picksup you like to tex-mex/duckbucker/tex-mex, you'll get two duck-quack tones instead of just in one position, and your bridge position might be a little better. just a thought, but that doesn't mean that your idea would sound bad either, and might even sound better to try somethign like that.
