Anyone got the answer to the veneer question ??? Why belly cuts on most sunburst MIM's are painted.

You have the answer. See the above picture of the pallet of MIM body blanks waiting to be cut and routed.

The belly cut is cut after the back is veneered, so it exposes the crummy wood that lies under. They hide the exposed crummy wood by painting the whole belly cut area black.

I've yet to see you stumped! 8)

On some other forum, I saw a picture of a veneered MIM body that had been completely stripped of paint and sanded in preparation for a new finish. It was not a pretty sight along the edges and belly cut (the places where the veneer wasn't).

Those pallet pics are painful to look at.

What about the 60s reissue where the burst follows the outer contour? Reckon that one is veneered in a more expensive way, or is it honest two piece body? I am looking at one on the 'bay right now.

I can't get the link to put a pic in, so take a llok and see if you;re so inclined

Looks like a 2 pc body, but I can't tell conclusively due to shadows and such.

That pallet is for Standard models. Higher quality woods (no veneers) are used on the more expensive (higher-end) MIM models.
