I've always used dunlop lemon oil for my rosewood fretboards, and for maple necks you just use some good old elbow grease

For the actuall fret cleaning the best thing is to tape up the wood of the fretboard so you leave the frets exposed and buy products called "PEEK" or "BLUE GOO" from Canadian Tire or Home Depot or any other hardware store. You put a tiny bit of this stuff on a cloth and wipe the frets and you should see all the black that comes off leaving your frets their shineiest :D

DO NOT use anything on a fretboard that was not made for wood. Certain ingredients in things like WD40 and cheap whiskey will eat away at your fretboard. And they smell bad too.

Having talked about naphtha and lighter fluid above, it bothered me mightily to read what Chet said, in case I was giving out bad and distructive advice. I'd never looked at what Dan Erlewine has to say on the subject, so I've been off and looked it up in the Guitar Player Repair Guide. And Dan recommends... naphtha and lighter fluid. Phew!

Though he also talks about the wood rotting effects of finger grease and, like many in this thread, exhorts us not to let our guitars get into a grotty state in the first place.

There's nothing macho about a filthy fretboard. Somehow in the mind a dirty guitar neck goes together with dirty underwear - eugh!

Cheers - C

PS Mr Bill: my bottle of lemon oil is nearly as old as yours. Not a profitable business, the lemon oil one, eh?

Yes, there are bad things for the fretboard. Check out what I wrote at another similar thread:

If the old bottle of "lemon oil" doesn't smell like lemons any more, then it's probably just mineral oil now, which is good.

How interesting: we live and learn. It would be cheeky of me to cut and paste your words from that other thread - but you might want to write that info into this one too. Rightly or wrongly, I tend to regard Martin as Holy Writ on this kind of thing.

I'll be looking out for that oil, when I'm next in the appropriate kind of music shop.

Thanks - C
