I would go with the hwy because it has 22 frets.

That being said, there is a lot I prefer about the delux: pups & conventional finish.
I would prefer to have the Tex Mex pups in the deluxe. I have the Tex Mex in my SSS and I love them. I am also not entirely sold on the ultra-thin nitro finishes on the Hwy 1. But that 22nd fret is what would sway me.

Just my $0.02

Going off what eibach is telling you, would you rather a finish that's going to last? or a finish that's designed to wear out and age kind of fast?

Pickups are interchangeable. If you decide on a guitar, and aren't happy with the pickups, it's no problem at all to have other ones installed.

Finish is a problem, if you buy a guitar, and want it looking new for years, the Highway 1 probably isn't for you. However, if you like the relic look on some of your heros guitars, you might as well get the Hwy 1, as it'll be your own relic work that gets done to it as you play it.

As for neck feel, playability, I can't comment on either of those guitars, as I haven't played either, so I'll leave that to someone who is more experienced.

I own a HSS Highway One, I LOVE it! I think American guitars are far superior to Mexico guitars. I've modified mine with Graphtech saddles and nut, a Carvin humbucker, and I've disconnected the tone knobs and added a 3-way switch. The thin finish really lets the guitar resonate well and it ages well also. My Highway One fells more sturdy than a Mexico Fender and it looks and sounds and plays nicer too. I would also consider looking for older USA Fender Strats because I use my beatup old 74' Strat just as much if not more than my Highway One. The Highway One is a great guitar to modify and its built to last multiple lifetimes. Buy USA.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But MIA's are "more sturdy" ... ? Sorry, that makes me laugh.

When mexican strats first went on sale locally years ago they were
plaqued by the occasional wood-boring worms that were in the wood
as larvae when the guitars were made than would emerge after purchased!
No thanks, I'll buy American anyday. Or go to a dealer and pickup a used
one for $150-$200 dollars. Quality on MEX-wannabe-strats=muy mal...

For just a couple hundred more or so I would go with the HWY1
