ok i have a decision to make and i need some professional advice.

i'm going to buy a lite ash fender as from the few guitars i have played in the guitar shop around my budget it is just seems the all round best with the duncan pickus n' all.

but....big but here. i dont know whether i should get a strat or a tele because i play 2 different kinds of music, i like to play rock and some classic hendrix stuff etc, which i think is obviously more suited for the strat but i also love indie music ( the kooks for example is a favourite band of mine) and i think my indie side would be better with a tele.

so which should i buy tele or strat?...i need some answers before i spend my hard earned cash :?

p.s ive tryed them both in the shop but it was a prety limited experience in a full shop with 3-4 people also testing stuff.

P.SS this will be my first electric guitar and im pretty much a begginer guitarist only been playing about 4 months on acoustic.

Way to go making the move to electric! It's good that you've played enough guitars to get a good idea of what you want. My opinion is that the strat is more versatile, so if you don't know what sound you want, you will be happier with the strat. There are a lot of indie bands that play strats, too. :D

The Strat and Tele are probably the two most versatile guitars on the planet. Really, either will do you well. Either can do anything the other can. It really depends on which one you like the feel of best. If they both feel equally good, then choose the one that sounds best to you.

Pick a decent amp and play them clean with no dirt. Try the different pickup positions. Overdive and distortion can be added and tweaked later, but without a good foundation you will pretty much be a one trick pony.

I have both. If, however, I were forced to have one guitar with which to play the rest of my life it would be the Strat. To me the pickups give it an edge as far as veratility goes.

Well here's my advice, buy the one you like better! :)
Just because a certain style might be affiliated to a certain style of guitar I wouldn't really wrap my decision around that.
Think of it this way, you can play any style with any style of guitar.
Don't let your guitar define your playing style brother!

Now for me, the strat is more versatile. Although i mainly use it for lead and my tele when i play solo bar type gig's. But when i'm with the band i'll stick with the strat because i have more options, i can jump around without having to change guitars. Now another thing to consider (what i failed to understand when i started way back) is the amp! The sound you want is really going to be effected by the amp your using.

Considering your a beginner i'd stick with the strat but if you like the tele get that! (with the tele slap some 11's and feel the TONE :D haha ).

peace, love, p.

First came the telecaster... then the stratocaster was born.
The stratocaster is very versitile & so is the telecaster...
Actually if u modify the electronics the right way u can get "tele tones" on a strat.
You can do the same with a tele getting some "strat tones".
For me the real clincher was that the strat is so much more comfortable than the tele.
When the strat was created, one of the things they were trying to do was
make the instrument more comfortable on the player's ribs compared to the tele.
Do u do alot of finger picking?
Tele's are nice for that cuz there is no middle pickup which is good for finger picking.
Personally I like my middle pickup & the curves of my strat body just fine.
Also, finger picking is easy on my strat even with that middle pickup there.

Keep in mind that my perfect fitting shoes might make your feet hurt!
Play them both more, your opinion is all that matters.
