Hey all,
I have a few questions re: Floyd Rose trems and strats. I would like to get a Squier or a used MIM strat and put of Floyd Rose on it (not sure if I want to pay the $500 for the Fender Floyd Rose/Fat Strat). Specifically, I was thinking of the Guitar Fetish Floyd Rose trems - I think they're around $65.
http://store.guitarfetish.com/blflroflotrs.html
Can you just swap out the old trem for a Floyd on these models? Any issues with this swap?
What is the issue with the locking nut? Do I need a new nut and/or neck then?
Another question I have is whether Fender makes a Squier Fat Strat? Just looking for a Fender that is slightly inexpensive and has the humbucker in the bridge.
Any assistance would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Try looking up the mod at this link :

My experience with locking Floyd Rose systems has been a PITA!

I'd go with a roller nut and locking tuners. Just my opinion.

Those links were very helpful in helping me figure some things out, I appreciate you sending those my way.
I agree with some of the posters re: SRV's and Beck's use of the standard trem - it works well for them, and really, on my standard HWY1 strat, I've had nothing but good results with using the trem.
I think maybe I just need a strat with a humbucker in the bridge and the best non-Floyd trem I can put in there - I will be looking into the various trems that Fender manufactures and see what is what.
Thanks, I'll be re-reading these posts and getting some more info.
And yeah, after looking into it, modding a strat with a FR trem sounds like a pain, so I can either upgrade a Squier, or save the $$$ and get the HSS Floyd Standard Strat.
Thanks for the input-that helped a lot! :D

Save for it. It is hard to beat the quality for the price u get from fender these days.
Especially if u have to get someone to route the wood for a floyd...
It would be smarter just to buy a guitar in my opinion.

You also have to worry about the pick up poles not lining up properly with a wider floyd rose style tremelo.

I agree with everything Miami Mike and bss have said, above. All excellent advice. Save for the real thing, if you feel you truly must have a Floyd.

I have posted elsewhere at length on how to swap a six-screw trem for a two-point one. I can dig that out for you if you really want - but it honestly is a pain in the - . Not the way to go unless you have a really good reason; or are a crazy glutton for punishment (like me). Add to that the routing for the Floyd's back plate - nah, there's better ways to spend your days...

Cheers - C

I bought a MIJ Squire around 1986, and a few years later decided to modify it with a Floyd Rose II locking trem along with EMG pickups. I made a very amature job of the routing but everything was near enough in the right place and it worked just as I had hoped it would, still does as a matter of fact. This guitar has been my main guitar for nearly twenty years, and I still use it in preference to my others, and that includes some very nice Patrick Eggle's. I originally installed a set of active EMG SA single coils, which are excellent sounding as well as noiseless. When one of the pup's packed up on me I decided to try an EMG 89 in the bridge, I had to rout out some wood for it and also decided to keep the angle of the original single coil. The 89 is switchable from humbucker to single coil via a push/pull on the lower tone knob. Still sounds like a strat should in single coil mode but without the normal hum, and with the added bonus of that fuller and more sustainable humbucking sound when switched.
If you decide to go ahead with the modification I would suggest you do it on a guitar that has the vintage style trem, (where you will have more wood to drill) not a two point pivot system because the pivot post holes will not match. The spacing of the pivot posts on a two point strat system is 2 1/4 inches or 57mm, the Floyd Rose system is 2 7/8 inches or 75mm, centre to centre.
The picture shows my headstock being a bit cluttered, and if I ever did a similar job again I would certainly opt for the locking tuners instead of having to drill out the neck for the string lock retaining bolts.
Having said that, I am more than happy with mine and it makes for quite a versatile guitar.
Cheers, Paul
