Ok so I have a yamaha acoustic, played that for a year, then my friend lend me his strat (a 1997 AMERICAN STRAT!!!!!) but I am not really good enough to hear or tell the difference between good and bad tone... and now I am thinking about buying one myself, not AM Strat of course, I listen to stuff like John Mayer, so I don't want to buy an expensive one, i plan to buy a good one AFTER my first electric guitar. with that being said, I am down to 2 choice basically:

Fender MIM standard or Squier Deluxe series!

I didn't want to buy squier guitars until few weeks ago, but yeah, i don't know.... I compared both specs side to side, and didn't really find any differences.... except for

Squier-basswood body, die-cast tuner...
fender-"select" alder body, fender tuner...

any owner of the two guitars?

squier Dexluxe:

Fender MIM standard:

thanks a bunch!!!

edit: I forgot to mention: also different pickups

I think a lot of people on this forum would agree that the MIM strat is a very good guitar, beginner or otherwise. It's a high enough quality instrument that it's worth upgrading it if there is something specific you want to address and it's basic enough that you are more or less just paying for a good, quality, no frills guitar. I don't think the same could be said for the Squire.

The MIM is made for guys like you. It'll hold you over for years as your ear grows better and you make upgrades to it. Then one day a few years from now you'll pick up a $1400 strat and say "WOW", now I see the difference!

Agreed go for the MIM not the squire. MIMs are real good guitars! 8)

+ 1 -- With a nicely modded MIM, often one will pickup the more expensive brothren only to be surprised at how little the difference.

A well cared for US made Strat won't depreciate below $700. Doesn't matter if it's a 1998 or 2008; that's the bottom of the well. This means you can buy a great Strat for $700, play it for years, and get your money back. The new American Standards can be purchased used on eBay for $700. That's where I bought my latest baby ($745 w/shipping). The point is if you buy a new MIM it is worth maybe half of what you paid when you sell. Pay a couple hundred extra up front and you have a better guitar that is worth what you paid later. YMMV.

If you're willing to buy used, you can get a higher-end MIM Strat like a Classic Player's or Jimmie Vaughan for about the same price as a new MIM Standard. I would go that route, as the higher-end MIM Strats often feature upgraded pickups and hardware. The JV, for example, sports Tex-Mex pickups and US-made hardware (tuners, bridge, etc).

I would get the MiM strat HANDS DOWN...
Then u will have a keeper strat from the start.
You will likely do upgrades down the road & u will treasure it later.

You will do fine with a MIM Strat or Telecaster, as mentioned above. The MIM line was made to target the working musicians budget, or those who arent ready to take the plunge into the 1k+ guitar market. You really do get what you pay for with guitars, Yet at your skill level you will be fine with a middle of the road guitar like a MIM series guitar. When your ready to step up to a even better quality, better sounding guitar, the made in America line will be waiting. Theres nothing worse then spending a truck-load of money on something just to find out that you really aren't that interested in it after a year or so. Me on the other hand ..... I just have more dollars then "sence" and my hobbies seam to get outta hand quickly. "Hey where did those 3 guitars come from??" O_o I dont even remember buying them!!......hehe =)

Good luck!

Jay

Not to start another Mexican-American war, but I have never seen a MIM strat for sale (locally) for much below $250, regardless of model year. On the flip side, I haven't seen MIA strats offerred for much below $600-$700. If you do the math, those are both about 60% of the new value. I agree that an MIA is worth more, but I don't think the "MIAs hold their value better" arguement holds water. That's just my opinion, though.

The Classic series Squiers are physically a higher grade strat than
a MIM strat, in both terms of electronics and fit and finish. All other
squiers and MIM are similiar with squier manufacturing a low to mediumish
grade and MIM is a medium to mediumish grade. A Highway one MIA
is really a mediumish grade guitar, by the way ........been playing strats
since 1987.......
