Dave's was a 1957 Strat, I believe.

The Japanese "Tribute" model is # HST-57DM

Quote:
“There’s a little bit of history behind the guitar,“says veteran Iron Maiden guitarist Dave Murray of the 1957 Strat he used to produce the wailing sounds heard on each of Iron Maiden’s first eight albums. “It used to belong to Paul Kossoff of Free. I bought it in 1976, a year after he died. I saw it advertised in an English magazine called Melody Maker, and I went down and checked it out. I got the serial numbers to make sure that it was his guitar!

“He used that guitar on a lot of Free. I actually saw him many years ago using it during a Free performance of ‘My Brother Jake’ on an English television show called Top of the Pops. They were one of my favorite bands, and I had to have that guitar because it belonged to Kossoff.

“I paid about $1,400 for it, which in 1976 was quite a bit of money. But I didn’t care. I just sold everything I had so I could get it. And I used it from then on. It just felt like I was holding a piece of magic, because he used this guitar”

Aside from replacing the original Fender pickups with DiMarzio humbuckers (“to fatten up the sound a bit”), Murray did nothing to alter the maple-neck, black-and-white guitar. “I used it on tour,” he continues. “It was my main guitar, and I played everything with it: lead and rhythm, clean stuff, heavy stuff. It was real versatile.”

Nevertheless, Murray gave his trusty Stratocaster an honorable discharge from active duty several years ago. “I used to guard it with my life,” he says. “But it did start to get a little knocks in it just from general wear and tear. So I decided to retire it. It’s sitting in my mother’s house now, though I do pick it up now and again.”

That is so cool. The funny thing is I just did that to mine this past Tuesday. The only thing different about mine is it has a Parchment 3 ply guard I used a Super Distortion 3 in the bridge and a Humbucker from Hell in the neck. along with a FS1 in the middle. Has chrome mounting rings along with aged hardware too. I also put Vintage string trees on it along with 70's Fender tuners. I might change out the neck pup, not sure if I like it, it's a little to middy for me. I also have the exact same poster framed and hanging on my wall. the real killer is I actually had the MIJ maiden strat but had to sell it when Iwas getting a divorce (plus a 61 RI SG and a ESP M II).
WHat pickups did you go with? Super Distortions just like Dave? If so, how do they sound? I use a Marshall DSL 50 thru a Vintage 30 loaded cab.

Thanks for the compliment. The HWY1s are great stock but I had alway wanted a Dave Murray Style strat.

Sounds like you did a killer jod on yours but need to post pics or it did not happen

I went with Dave's specs, though I had to add the pickguard for the look, the Dimarzios- A DP100 Super Distortion in the bridge, an Am std in the middle and a DP103 PAF in the neck. The pickups nail his tone. I just love the sound of the SD. Having been using EMG's for so long, I forgot how great passive p/us can sound. I am running it thru JCM900 with a 1960 Cab with 75s and V30s.

Register at Photobucket.com or imageshack, upload pics, copy the IMG code and paste it in your post.

Hope this helps!

Love it. It's not stock though (none of my guitars are!!). I put in a Gibson 57 classic pup in the the neck and a 57 Classic Plus in the bridge. I installed a TonePros saddle with a Gotoh aluminum stopbar tailpece with TonePro Locking Studs. I have the stopbar screwed down tight to the body and I wrap my strings over the top like Joe Bonamassa and Zakk do. Definitly rocks, the sustain is awesome. The last thing I did was installed a RS Guitarworks Vintage SG wiring harness, expensive but definitly worth it. Here's the site if you've never been there before, all kinds of neat goodies.

Did you change the volume and tone controls? Did you leave the Greasebucket circuit alone or remove it? If you did what values did you use for the pots and tone capicitar. I left all my controls stock and was wondering if that's why my neck pup is really muddy. The middle and bridge sound fine. I ordered the same neck pup you have in yours so I hope it helps. Thanks
