I get a "tic" or "tweak" sound that comes from strings around the nut of the guitar on my am deluxe. After the I hear the sound the string that caused the sound is usually out of tune. It seems that the guitar strings get stuck in the nut and when they stretch or shrink from different pressure they suddenly give a little bit instead of moving freely the during the changes. Sometimes during trem use a string will loosen correctly but get "stuck" before it is back to its original position. This leaves it tunes higher than it should be. When I tune I can hear the tics and the tuning jumps instead of smoothly changing. I started experiencing the problems when I went from .009s to .011s. Did I correctly describe what is actually happening to the strings or am I way off? How do I keep this from happening. The tuning instability is killing me! Thanks for any advice.

Two cures.
One: Take it to a tech to have your nut filed.
Two: Graphite the nut grooves so the string doesn't stick.

Cryingstrat is right, I'd take it to a tech , have the nut re-cut for 11s and do a complete setup . Intonation will need to be set, etc.

If he gets the nut cut, would there be any problem going back to smaller strings? I had one strat that did the same thing, but stopped after maybe a week of playing. Do they break in after a little while?

It's really best to to find the gauge you like at stick with it. Otherwise you'll be doing setups on your guitar all the time. Have you considered getting something like a used MIM to use for a different gauge? One guitar for 9's, one for 11's. Each setup correctly.

I would try the graphite (rub some pencil lead in the nut grooves) befor cutting. It worked wonders for me.

Thanks for the help. I will try the graphite grease from stew-mac to see if it clears up before I have any modifications done. I also looked into the LSR roller nut for a solution but I am finding very mixed reviews for it. Most of the problems that I read about are from lost bearings on a dim stage. there are a few cases of warping bearings too. I assume that the roller nut would cause a tone change of some sort. Has anyone had any experience with this?
