I see discussions on how to repaint a strat. But, it seems to me, that you would 'never' want to repaint American or Japanese made stratocasters. Road worn strats are in high demand. And, repainting a strat would destroy its value as a collectible.

Thoughts?

On original nitro finished guitars, I would agree and to some extent collectible poly finishes as well.

Otherwise, if you own a guitar it's entirely up to you and can be a fun and rewarding experience that may make an ordinary guitar look and feel like the ONE.

Subject to the age and condition of a nitro finished guitar I would consider it. I indeed have done when I bought a butchered Road Worn that someone thought they could relic more.

Obviously a vintage guitar wants leaving well alone as refinishing it can destroy its value no matter how well executed.

Poly guitars are an interesting conundrum. To my mind that age very badly. The poly is pretty robust but if damaged tends to chip away if badly damaged and not wear like nitro. It is also an absolute swine to remove and can be hit and miss to get a good bond if you leave it.

I don't really consider a body to be integral to the guitar and would probably just get an unfinished replacement body to my specification, finish it myself and put the original aside untouched so, if it has any value, can be remarried to the guitar at a later date for sale.
