I know I'm getting to the party a little late. Please excuse me if any of my comments seem redundant, but I find this topic very refreshing as well as interesting.

From my point-of-view, as well as most of my piers, it matters little what the guitars body is made of in terms of sound quality. The pickups are what makes or breaks any guitar. You could have a solid gold body that resonates forever, but if you install cheap pickups you're going to get a cheap sound.

Now where physics are concerned. I would definitely agree that the more dense the material the more sustain, i.e variations in tone, you will get to the amp.

Conversely, the lighter or least dense material will allow the sound vibrations to dissipate more quickly, not allowing for the subtle nuances in tone at the amp.

As far as different types of tone-woods... I've actually visited a website that discussed this at some length.

I was interested in the tonal qualities of basswood as it seems to be the growing choice of some manufacturers.

Basically each has their own characteristics in terms of accentuating highs, lows, and mids.

Sadly it would appear that these decisions on the part of the manufacturers are based solely or in part upon their abundance and availability vs. cost.

Great topic. Tired of the same old, same old!

Sorry, didn't mean to open a new topic. Meant to reply only. And I'm attempting to answer a physics question... LOL!
