A buddy of mine from work was telling me about his guitar class, we have the same teacher, and was telling me that when he tuned his guitar after he arrived, he could not get it to sound right. After a closer look, he saw that the neck had bowed a good 1/2 inch. I asked him if he left his guitar in his car, and he said he left his house, put the guitar in the back seat and went to class. He plays a MIM Strat, that is only a couple of months old.
I don't have a Fender yet, and am curious if this is going to be a problem. I live in Phoenix, where it gets just a bit warm. I would never leave my guitar in the car for any length of time except to go to class. This kind of behavior could be a deal breaker for me if this is fairly common.
Your expert opinions are solicited and appreciated.

leave any guitar in a car in a desert climate and its going to suffer.
a half inch bow on the neck sounds more like he's broken the truss rod. tap the neck and listen for rattling, it happens but should be covered by manufacturers warranty and if the consumer rights in the us are the same as the uk he will be covered by the shop warranty too (if any item breaks or is found to be faulty within 6 months of purchase, the seller must accept that the goods were faulty at the time of sale and provide a refund/replacement).

I have lived in Phoenix and personally I would not leave a guitar in a car at all.

As far as your friends guitar goes, it does sound like the truss rod has issues.

Oh, he did not leave it in the car. He only lives about ten minutes away from the studio. I will mention to him about checking out the TR. Is this something that can be expected? Or is this a fluke?

Pretty rare.

really 3 scenarios:

1) someone who doesn't know what they are doing was monkeying around with it.

2) Dropping the guitar(and sadly I have dropped my strat more than once, but luckily never damaged it,) or something onto the guitar, that broke it.

3) Defect in the part.

if he didnt damage the guitar then it is most likely covered through the warranty as stated above.

I spent several months in Arizona in the summer once. That amazing heat could definitely do damage if the guitar were left in a car standing in the sun for hours. But ten minutes, especially if the instrument was in the case? Nah.

Either something very wrong has been done to that guitar, or it is an extremely rare dud. You say it is only two month old: still well inside the one year warranty. Your friend needs to take it back to the shop he bought it from and get the problem fixed.

You are asking if this is a common issue with Stratocasters? It isn't. Someone here will know just how many gazillions of instruments Fender make in a year - there's bound to be one or two with problems. But most people here will tell you quality control has never been better from Fender - or, to be fair, most other modern instrument makers. We live in great times, equipmentwise.

Buy with confidence!

Cheers - C
