I am in line to get the #4 "Relic" model off the line. I think this is a big deal because of the collector value it could potentially have. My question for all of the more enlightened fender enthusiasts out there is.......... what do you think? Purely from a collectors item standpoint, is it worth $4,800?

I think you are the only one that can answer that question. Personally, I would not, simply because the mojo is factory made instead of stage (or bedroom) made. Just my humble opinion. 8)

Only time will tell. Like any investment, it's a gamble. Personally, I don't think any strat is worth $5000.

I guess you know you opened a can of worms as you will get more negative comment than positve. Most posters will say they want to find thier own sound and can build a strat just like the custom shop. Ha! It's like Fender says " When your're ready" I think you buy what you want and what you can afford. Don't worry about the rest.

P.S. If you do a search you will find several threads with various opinions.

Thats a very true statement. If such person is capable of knocking up a custom shop quality guitar why dont they work for the custom shop? I bet the master builders are paid in ruby's and diamonds and likewise their produce is worth the money it demands.
On the other hand i think that artist/signature/tribute guitars are all trophies, they appeal to the 14 year old in us, remember when you were a kid and wanted to play just like so and so? I really do see such guitars as being a superb marketing pitch in this area. Cant shell out 200 gazillion pounds for srv's strat, well we make identical ones. The underlying unspoken sales pitch is 'yes you will be one step closer to sounding like your hero'.
I'm a sucker for it too, im just waiting till i get enough money to buy a mosrite johnny ramone 8) . After that im gonna grow my hair long again and dig out my old leather jacket and look totaly ridiculous during my mid-life crisis. I'm going to enjoy it though. :D

The guitar is no question a "limited edition" piece of memoribilia. But since it is a guitar, I suggest playing the crap out of it. HOWEVER ... play the crap out of it ... G-E-N-T-L-Y. That way you still maintain the investment, but get to enjoy it, too. For me, who wants to buy a Ferrari just for it to always be garaged 24/7??

Although, there is nothing wrong with buying it just to put it on a wall, too. I have a buddy who does not play at all, who bought an EVH art-series guitar for his wall (hand taped by Eddie himself). That guitar has and never will be played.

I am okay with what ever you do with it. Just don't go "Peter Townshend" on us, and after one one of your gigs smash it to splinters. Okay??
:D

"David Gilmour Strat Valid Instrument or Trophy?"

Both, I think. Depending on what you do with it: play it or display it.

I don't think it would be a very good investment if you are hoping to make a profit buying then later selling it.

I think it is a valid playing instrument with the mini toggle switch that provides many different tones. Why let a glass box hide its tonal capabilities!
