I'm dissatisfied with my Highway One's Alnico 3 magnets. It hasn't been powerful enough for me (I'm figuring that a ceramic bar or Alnico 5 will remedy that right away) and I'm also not hearing the bell-like tones than are usually present in Stratocasters. I use to use a Deluxe with Vintage Noiseless, but it sometimes sounds a bit to harsh and brittle when distorted. I've heard great reviews of the SCN and Hot Vintage Noiseless, but have yet to actually try them out extensively. I'd love to hear your opinions on this issue and some recommendations for a pickup set. Fender pickups and Seymour Duncans preferred.

I'm sure you can find a loaded pickguard on EBay from an Eric Johnson strat. They sound fantastic.

Maybe the alnico-5 Tex Mex is what you are looking for? I think these are very versatile.

Just my $0.02

I'm thinking your amp is the weakest link in your tone chain.

Are you trying to use any pedals?

What type of amp/pedals/fx are you using? That is key, actually, to a large part of your sound.
Remember, a $1000 amp can make a $300 guitar sound like a $1000 guitar.
With that said, I also found the pups in the HWY1 not to my liking.
I swapped em out for Seymour Duncans.
I got SSL-1 for neck/mid and an SSL-5 for the bridge.
The SSL-1's will give you the vintage tone and bell-like out of phase sound.
The SSL-5 is a HOT pickup that will crunch hard with some overdrive.
Check the Duncan website for specs, but I think that the SSL-5's DC resistance is about 12.
Also, look into Guitar Fetish pickups. Very high quality, low price. I've used two sets of these pups in guitar projects and the results are amazing.
Highly recommended if the Duncans are out of your price range.

Gotta agree with the EJ pickup recommendation. These pickups are the shizzit.

To me "Clapton-like tone when clean, roaring tone when dirty" describes a Marshall tube amp. So I'll also have to agree that you should look at your amp selection.

Try what Robin Trower is currently using to get his gutsy overdive right now. Mile Fuller's (Fulltone OCD) overdrive pedal. Please visit www.fulltone.com
