Hi there friends! Can someone help me identify my Strat? I know is MIA and a reissue but it has an unusual color and pick guard color. I don't know what year it is a RI for but I think the sn which is V followed by 6 digits means it was manufactured between 82-88. Thanks for any info you can provide!

Hi baseboy,

There were no RI made in 1982, and the V followed by 6 digits has been used for a long time for the RI guitars. The color is not unusual, but looks like the pick guard has been changed, and who knows what else has been changed. You might look under the pick guard to see what else has been changed, pickups, wiring, etc.

I think that the very first RI guitars were made in 1985, but were made in Japan for the first year or two. You can email the serial number to Fender consumer relations, and they might be able to give you more info.

With just those pics, no major alarms ringing.

On the serial number; "For U.S. Vintage Series, check neck date for specific year", so dating is still way unfinished. BTW, even if it's not a U.S. Vintage Series, the neck end and neck pocket usually give clues.

Checked the price lists, the first "Vintage Stratocaster" models (10-0908 for the '57 and 10-0909 for the '62) appear in 1981.

Fender's records only go back to about 1993, so the Consumer Relations may not be able to help if the guitar is older than that.

To get images on the forum, dropbox isn't the best alternative. Here's a test image (copied your image address from right click the pic > "Properties" on your link), but if db uses a random address, it may not show for long:

Thanks guys! I posted this almost a week ago but it didn't get approved until today. In the mean time I was able to find out what the heck it is. You sre correct its not the original pick guard but all else is original. Unfortunately one of the pickups is dead and one is dying... and the first ones shipped in 82.

Its a 1990 and here is what I got from Fender,

Model Number: 010-0909-(Color#)
Series: U.S. Vintage Series
Body: Alder
Neck: Maple
Fingerboard: Rosewood (7.25” Radius/184 mm)
Frets: 21 Vintage Size
Scale Length: 25.5” (648 mm)
Nut: 1.650” (42 mm)
Hardware: Chrome
Machine Heads: US Vintage Style
Bridge: US Vintage Style Tremolo
Pickguard: 3-Ply White
Pickups: 3 US Vintage Single Coils
Pickup Switching: 3 Position Blade
Controls: Master Volume, Tone (Neck), Tone (Mid)
Colors: (500) 3-Color Sunburst,
COMMENTS: First appears in the Dec. 1981 price list, however, they did not begin shipping until toward the end of 1982.
Changed from U.S. Vintage Series to American Vintage Series in 7/1998

Regards,
Paul Levesque,
