Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. I have an American PRS and an Ovation Acoustic/Electric, and would like to add an American Strat to the family. I've been looking at the American Performer series pretty seriously, but also found used American Standards for a few dollars cheaper. From the prices I've seen, it's roughly $300 cheaper to buy a used American Standard from just about any year. But, I don't know much about those guitars. I like the features on the new American Performer series. Anybody got any tips/advice that could help?

Performer has the large CBS style headstock that some find ugly... I like them.
Performer has Jumbo frets.
Performer has the vintage style (6 screw) bridge.
Performer has a P-P pot that activates the neck pickup allowing for neck/bridge and all-3 options.
Performer does *not* have micro-tilt

AmSTD comes with a hardshell case.

I’d go for the new one and make it yours personally. It’s funny to say that because I’m struggling between a jimmy page, performer or maybe a used professional. I can say this, I played a performer Tele and it was beautifully made. The neck was so nice and smooth and bends and everything were so easy on it, I enjoyed playing it. The performers are REALLY nice guitars but you can always change the wiring on the standard to have the push/pull. So the standard can be everything the performer has plus more.

Used, you can get some great deals but you also buy at a risk. Fret and nut wear can be an issue as well as other possible abuse damage or authenticity.

The specification of the Performer is right there for my taste so, if it was me, that is what I would go with. You then have the comfort of knowing exactly what you are buying. If you can try several this can help as all guitars are different.

I think you answered your own question.

You can find great deals on a used Strat all day long(looking at deals on Reverb right now). I have a 2018 American Professional that I have hardly played, instead I reach for a 30+ year old American Standard. As far as buying used and getting a lemon....that can happen with a new guitar as well. I love used guitars, they have character that you don't find with a new guitar, and you can save $$ on a guitar that has little to no use. If you do buy used, get the pictures you need and the questions that you have answered before you buy. Good luck.
