Hi,

Have a Custom Shop Strat, second hand. The tuners are weird for me, they are Klusons which unscrew on the top of the tuner - there's a slot for a screwdriver. But how do you string the tuner before you pop the screw-head back on please? My Strat manual does not discuss this tuner system, it took me several hours to identify these tuners on the internet.

Thanks,

Ric

I think you have ruined your machine head and will need to replace it. The slot is to accommodate the string not for a screw driver.

Tuners like this, perhaps?
https://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Pa ... uners.html

There have been other types and brands of top-locking vintage-style tuners.

With these Gotohs, you stick the string through the hole, hold the top stationary with a coin or screwdriver, then turn the tuning knob to drive the centerpost up into the top to pinch the string.

The slot is for the string, not a screwdriver. You cut the string to length, stick the end of the string into the top hole (center of slot) and wind the string. I hope you didn't go after it with a screwdriver. As someone said, if you did, the tuner is now likely ruined.

Yes, that's the one, it screws down onto the string, trapping it - got it sussed after about 3 hours googling ;)

Do you guys 'like'/'unlike' posts here please? Newb. I liked the last post. Had to sign in twice because the system threw out my details. Emailed the administration and got no reply. I sorted the tuners from last Friday, was trying to get through to the forum ever since. Got here in the end. Strats rule! :)

The forum software is pretty basic. No like/unlike, you can't even attach images without hosting them on Imgur or some other hosting site that allows hot linking of images.
Your access delay was due to two things... new users are held in limbo until manually approved to limit spam (and even so, occasionally one gets in and if they get in on a Friday it's a HUGE mess by Monday), and for the last couple of weeks, Fender employees have been busy with NAMM.
AFAIK, there is only one paid Fender employee to takes care of the forum, though a few other employees may participate on their own time and in an unofficial capacity.

It really needs more admins if this community is going to grow otherwise it will be the same old boys chewing the fat until we all disappear.

With regard to safety post tuners...they are without doubt my absolute favourite. They look tidy, can be restrung quickly and, if you do need to remove the strings without doing a string change there is a very good chance they will restring without issue. There is nothing not to like.

Proper Klusons are a little bit nicer than the Fender versions as they are a bit smoother but can be a pain to swap as the Klusons have a thicker post.

It was one of those designs (like the Strat) that was absolutely perfect at the time and didn't need changing for any other reason than marketing or economy.

I am rather excited that Fender has readopted the safety post for their Performer series while keeping the modern nut and pin type mounting. This means I can swap safety posts onto my modern tuner guitars when they become available.

Thanks CB & John,

It may not be an issue of how many moderators are available, it might be a system issue instead?

The forum is logging me in automatically now but I have no idea what my password is. I knew what it was - but then the forum threw my password out repeatedly. In desperation I started to create an alternative account but when I submitted it I found myself logged into this forum, under my original account. So I have no idea what password Fender is now associating with my account - is there any way I can see my account details to work out what has happened to my password please?

Another thing I notice is that when you are signed in, the 'sign in' box top right is still there. This may be part of my confusion, wouldn't it be better to have that box vanish - or saying 'welcome' or something - after you have signed in please? Thanks again.

Thanks. Got no problem with the Kluson design, I have a problem with my Fender Custom manual which I couldn't find them in, and the shop where I bought the Strat - who are great guys - but neglected to tell me anything about this inventive, unique tuner system. If I'd been out gigging - and needed a string change - it would have been a disaster. As it is, it is a miracle I didn't end up damaging the headstock in frustration. Thankfully all is cool now though ;)

Thanks, it's possible I guess.

It's a Fender Custom Shop '59 Stratocaster NOS', Serial R73193 dated 26th August 2013.

Don't know how to upload photos to this site so put a vid together. The music is mine & not played on the Fender.

Thanks man.
I think those tuners were the original ones for that model.
Enjoy your guitar! :D

A 59 would have had traditional tuners. I assume these have been changed or adapted.
