Hi folks, I've just noticed that on my Strato 64 Custom Shop with maple neck, there's a strange stain, as shown in the pictures. How can I remove it?

That https://lh3.google.com/u/1/d/1Np6wFA7OatzOy2t48JImz1UG9jcS6gU1=w2876-h1596-iv1 is a form which a) is not understandable for the forum software, and b) requires a sign-in if clicked as a link.

From a previous (dot color) topic, I know the OP can post pics, but a little reminder might make helping easier:
Quote:
First you need to upload your pics to the internet. Use a pic hosting site (imgur, imgbb or such - avoid photobucket) or some common web framework like e.g. facebook, googlephotos - whatever you're familiar with.
The important thing is that the web site provides you with a pic address - that's the one starting with 'http' or 'https' and ending in '.jpg'.

Copy the pic address, and use the IMG-command (visible when you write a message) on the forum.

Preview your post so everything is OK.

You clic on picture and chose open in other window.

For forum member the easy way to look at the picture wich is out of focus ! :(

That only works if one is signed on a google account.

...is if it's posted straight on the forum...
Now, "pic posting on the forum is no rocket science", as some wise forum member wrote.
And if someone is asking the forum to help, it would be wise and nice to make helping easy - not like this 'open the message to see the code, click a link, log in somewhere, open in new window, sprinkle with diamond dust, add six magic beans' stuff.

On that pic, it remains unclear if the darkened area is a discoloring in the wood (best to leave that alone) or in the finish (cleaning, rubbing, sanding etc; even a refin as options).

I don't of course know how experienced the OP is with guitar work, so judging by the question only: if it's a Custom Shop instrument, it might deserve a checkup & fixing done by a good pro.

Hi guys, I'm sorry for the problem with pics.
I always preview the message and I can properly see the picture, so that's probably not enough.
I'll ask a pro to check the stain.
Thank you all

It is difficult to tell from the picture but I am assuming the guitar is a Custom Shop relic of some sort. If this is the case the stain is probably intentional as part of the relic process. Old guitars get stains after all.

Either way, if the stain has entered the timber the options are limited. You (or your specialist) can sand the neck back until the stain disappears and then refinish the neck. Subject to how deep the stain has penetrated this could change the profile and feel of the neck. A refinish is very likely to change the feel of the neck just due to the feel of the finish itself.

If the stain is deep it might be possible to bleach it out but this can end up just emphasising the mark. Similarly a good French Polisher could probably touch out the stain - in effect paint over it so it matches the surrounding timber. This might look fine for a few years but as the neck darkens with age the touching in will remain the same colour and become more prominent as the years progress.

If it is just the lacquer that is stained it is an easy job to remove the lacquer from the back of the neck and refinish it. It will feel different for a period of time but only in the way new lacquer feels different to old.

It might also be possible to stain the stripped neck to match the stain but this is also risky as you might make the stain darker.

Unless the stain feels sticky, if it were me, I'd leave well alone and just get on and enjoy playing the guitar and accept the stain as part of the guitars unique character.

It's an heavy relic custom shop, unfortunately my phone is not working anymore, so that's the best pic I can take at the moment. Maybe you're right, it's just the relic process, I will accept it like that.
Thanks for the comprehensive response

IMO this stain look not in the relic process. I could be wrong too.
To me relic guitar is something may happened when you use guitar over many years . Like scratch , ding...

How a stain spot can happen ?

I saw your picture from your first post, so some see it and some don't. I don't understand that, but just so you know.
Leave it alone, especially learning that it's a relic. What difference does it make?

Not having a better understanding/view of the issue, I would leave it alone.
If it is just in the outer layer of the finish, I would sand it out and re-polish it.
Start w/ a wet sand using P800 and work up P1000, P1200, P1500 to about P2000 then apply whatever (non-silicone)guitar polish you prefer.
Always sand w/ the grain!

Over 50 imaginary years pretty much anything might cause a stain. Perhaps someone spilt a beer on it, or it was played with wet hands. One thing is for sure, either the stain was applied by Custom Shop intentionally or it got the stain subsequently in which case we can conclude guitars get stains which look exactly like that.

Absolutely. It's just part of the relicing process, no matter how it got there.
