Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum and new to Fender guitars and could use a little guidance. Up to this point, I've always been a humbucker guy, since I play mostly hard rock and metal. But I also like blues and classic rock and I feel that the single coil pickups would provide more versatility and sound better for that type of music. For example, learning The Sultans of Swing is a definite goal of mine and would obviously sound better on a Strat. I'm currently looking at 3 different used MIM Strats because they're too expensive brand new for me right now. I would love to hear the opinions from experienced Strat players that could lead me in the right direction. Here are the three I'm looking at:

1. Black and white with stock single coils - $375
2. White with blue lace sensor in the neck and orange lace sensor in the middle - $400
3. Red and white with EMG single coils - $400

Noting the value of the Lace Sensors and EMG installation in isolation these would seem to be the best value for money if all the guitars are otherwise identical. However, not all MiMs are the same so expensive PUPs on a cheaper guitar may not make it a good guitar. And, as noted above, much would also depend on how the installation was carried out.

If I was considering a modified guitar I think I would prefer carrying out the modifications myself on a completely original guitar so I knew exactly what I had.

All that said, the upgraded PUPs alone (assuming they aren't fakes) are worth a fair portion of the asking price of your examples.

And finally - Strats are almost unique insofar as you can change almost anything you don't like about them. What isn't really economical is if you don't like the feel of the guitar. Changing the neck, if you don't like the shape, feel, frets etc. or body because you don't like the weight, contours, colour etc isn't really worth doing on a lower end guitar. So I would suggest you ignore the specifications and just get the one that feels best to you.

No offence meant, but this is one of the totally impossible questions - in essence, it's "which guitar would I be happy with"...

Plus, those definitions don't really tell a lot.
A stock MIM - which model?
EMG's; same thing - they can be gilmourish or metal screamers.
And Lace Sensors divide opinions - for me, from those three options, that would be the one I'd check first, but for someone else they'd be a dealbreaker.
Additionals: what guitar is the base in the b&c, any active circuits, who did the mods, what's the age & general condition etc; etc; etc...

When buying a first Strat, the most important thing is to buy it.
Then have it set up properly, and spend some time to get to know it (at least some months, but a year is not too long...). By that time one will usually know what (setup, components) needs to be changed - if anything.

I hope st52 is right and the OP is already playing the heff out of the new Strat...
