Post subject: Dose string gauge matter

Hey i have a question, if i play a fender american stratocaster and i use 9 gauge strings on it and i want to change up to like 11's or 12's do i need to make any major changes on the guitar. i know ill need to raise the action and set the intonation again, but do i need too do anything drastic to the neck or anythhing :?:

A change that dramatic might require a complete set-up: intonation, certainly, but also balancing the trem (if you use one), setting action and neck relief. It might reveal problems with high spots on frets and require a re-level as well, and I'd probably want to re-adjust pickup heights, too.

I'd just plan on doing a complete set-up.

I agree with what Gravity Jim said and would add as a suggestion...why not try a set of .010s first and *feel* the difference....you WILL notice !

i do use 10's on my sg and les paul but they arent thick enough, i think im gonna jump up to 11's.

10's will feel different on a Strat than they will on an SG or LP. Strats have a longer scale length, so the strings are held at a different tension. The same gauge string will feel looser on an SG or Les Paul than on a Strat. If a string is held at a higher tension (as on a Strat) it will feel thicker.

+1 on a full setup, If your fingers can handle it go for 12's. I think it's a bit of a jump from 9's but whatever works for you.
