I'd say you'd have to play them to find out. If they seem the same to you, then you don't need a $1000 strat yet. People can tell you this and that but guitar quality is all about feel and tone. Only you can tell that for yourself.

To be honest bro, it's all up to what feels right to you. People always try to tell you that the more expensive an axe is, then the better the tone is and the better it plays and they're all FULL OF CRAP! I can play a $400.00 MIM Strat and be just as happy as playing my $2,200.00 Caparison for example. Or play my $1,500.00 Jackson SLS Soloist and be just as happy playing a $1,500.00 US Strat. The better you get (or don't get) as a player, the more you can see that the only real difference in a lot of guitars is the quality with which they're made. To be totally honest you should check out the Jeff Loomis Schecter signature 7-string if you're really into Dethklok because that better fits their style. Unfortunately Fender doesn't make a 7-string for some reason and that's just too bad because I wish they did, but then again they also don't make a decent neck-through model either for some other reason. Wow! I just realized that Fender REALLY needs to wake the heck up and try to compete in the metal world  . Schecter is sending me a Loomis model to try out so I'll let you know how she shreds man...That's the other thing about Fender is that they seem to have no interest in metal at all which is a shame considering that it is the most demanding form of music to play PERIOD!!!

Thanks, i'll definately check that out.
And i agree, metal is huge now and fender doesn't seem to be following the trend. I heard Fender bought the Dean guitar company though, is that true?

Fender doesn't need to compete in the "metal guitar" market.

They own Jackson and Charvel.

Typically, it starts off with pickups, tailpiece & saddles, and colors. There are lots of models. The more homework you do up front, the better off you will be. Check out the models on line, then research them further in the forums. Good luck.

Fender bought practically everyone. They've bought Guild, Jackson, Charvel, Grestch, SWR, Sunn, Tacoma, and every company works independently of each other in the Fender factory and all those companies are in the Fender factory with their original employees and this company doesn't tell that company what to do or how to manufacture there instrument and that company doesn't tell this company what to do. It's all basically all those companies in the Fender factory still manufacturing their instruments as usual. Just think about it as sub companies or sub divisions into one big Fender factory.

the price difference is usually quality of parts (grades of woods, etc).

If you are talking between MIM and MIA, labor costs factor in as well.

i hope i don't get chewed out for this but, i think that the americans are great playing guitars but more about collecting, retaining value etc... the MIM are also great in the sense that you don't feel bad modding them and really making your own sig model, if you catch my drift... i have 2 u.s strats, a jagstang..... but my fav guitar is still my 97 MIM toronado that i modded myself. :D

imo get a MIM and kick the $@!& out of it, then buy some fancy shiny stuff and mod the hell out of it (i think you will always appreciate the cheaper one YOU worked on, than some stock guitar from the factory that your afraid to fool around with).. cheers

That's considering that your incompentent & are confident & sure of yourself that you can mod it yourself without screwing up the job. Some people who've tried to mod their guitars couldn't seem to get them back together or work properly. Some people don't even like to mess with their guitars.

There is a big different between them, but not everyone can notice or appreciate them.

I record, gig, tour, etc - a lot. I have a 94 MIM and a 98 MIA. The straight answer is the MIM is a great guitar. I could easily get by with just that, without a doubt. Period. But... butt... I appreciate the better fret edges, the better electrics, the straighter grain of wood on the neck, the little details that I don't really "need" but want and make my playing more enjoyable.. to ME.

Nobody every "needs" a BMW when a Ford Fusion can "get you around just fine". But if you can appreciate what it is, and can afford it, then for YOU, there is no question as to which one you WANT.

Your metaphor is a little off. Replace "Ford Fusion" (above) with "Ford Mustang GT". The MIMs are better than your Fusion comparo. Cool?
8)
