After all the talk I've heard from people who are building their own Strats, I got the itch to try it myself. I have a question about pickups.

I might be able to get my hands on an ash body that is routed for HSS. If I put a humbucker in the bridge position, can I get one with a coil splitter, or is that handled elsewhere in the electronics? Correct me if I'm wrong (new to this), but the coil splitter would allow me to choose whether the humbucker acts like a humbucker or as a single coil at my discretion, by cutting out one of the coils. Do I have this right?

Secondly, I would be playing primarily rock and blues (heavy on the blues). What would you say about a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gate in the bridge position and Tex Mex singles for the middle and the neck? Would these be a good combo, or is there something that would work better?

Thanks everybody.

Rather than building a Strat with the combination you just describe did you try looking that the Lone Strat which comes with a Duncan Pearly Gate in the bridge and two Texas special single coil. It is a MIM Strat, but well made. I own one myself, but there is no coil tap. A coil tap can be installed by a respected and certified guitar tech.

Good luck,

I agree, the LoneStar is a great Made in Mexico Fender Strat.
If u want TexMex not Texas Specials...
The 2008 MiA Standard Strat HSS comes with
2 TexMex's & Diamondback™ humbucker.
Is this your first strat?
U sound like u actually want to put one together to learn am I right?

How could I forget about the MIA Standard?
Yet another great Strat :D I personally don't own an American Standard, I own its cousin the American deluxe with two Samarium Cobalt noiseless pups that sound incredible and I am not too sure about the specs of the humbucker, but it puts out! The MIA standard retails for about $1149 & and the MIA Deluxe is about $1249. If you are not looking to break your bank account here are a two other alternatives,

1. MIA/Highway 1 Strat retails for about $700 it has a Fender Atomic high out put humbucker in the bridge and two standard single coil pup's wired to be extra hot!
2. MIM/The Sam Ash 48th street special Fat Strat retails for about $370, it comes stocked with a Tex-mex humbucker and two Tex-mex single coil pup's

You mentioned that you were looking to build this dream Strat of yours.
For the money you would spend on building out a Strat you can get one already made. For price and quality I would go with the lone star or the 48th st. special. I own both the Lone Star & the 48th street models and you can't go wrong with either they are both awesome Strats.

Happy Hunting,
Rayne

True, my goal is to learn...and that extra little kick you get when someone compliments you on your gear, and you tell them, "thanks...I built it!"

Anyway, thanks for all the insights. This is gonna be fun!

Scan back through some of the older Stratocaster threads (page 2, 3, etc) to find threads about Strat Projects/Building your own.
You'll get some hints and see other projects people built, like this one a buddy of mine built

Happy Hunting,

How is that any different than the Deluxe Fat Strat that Fender makes for anyone? Just out of curiosity.

Fender wrote:
Extreme tone with a ’70s vibe! The Deluxe Strat HSS combines two Tex-Mex™ single-coil pickups in the neck and middle positions with a Tex-Mex humbucking pickup in the bridge position. Special five-way switching offers a broad spectrum of tones. Comes equipped with a vintage tremolo.
