Those pencil crayons are clearly made of Alder.
I can tell by the tone.
It's as plain as day.

There's something not quite right about the crayon marker wax though.
You can tell by the mellow harmonics that it's a much softer wax and contains no carbon fibre or graphite.
I think HB pencils would have better tone but then I guess it wouldn't look as pretty.

Nonsense......that's mahogany!

I'd know that lumber anywhere.

I'd seen the video previously and could only ponder "Why?"

OK, it looks pretty sweet but, as I know to my cost, having a sweet looking guitar that is too heavy to be comfortable, or is generally unpleasant to play, is not an instrument it is an ornament.

Looking great should be a bonus not the primary consideration.

That may very well be the point.
Some people play, some people collect, and some people build.
I was always a better builder (and re-builder) of model aircraft than I was a pilot.
Sometimes someone will buy or build something that they intend to be a wall-hanger.

Amazon sells some nice display cases for them too :D

I seem to recall that the neck cavity failed during the build/machining and had to be glued back together. No real surprise there.

Structurally he couldn't have made it worse as all the wood is end grain on. If he had even put the pencils at a 45º angle he might have introduced more structural integrity.

Or he could have got a traditional body and wrapped it in pencil end grain printed vinyl. It would have looked the same a probably played better....but then I am obviously missing the point.

Mais ouí, mon amí!

Probably more like a kilogram.

John, you're right of course. That neck pocket is likely weaker than Herr Hillary's excuse for the missing 33,000 e-mails. But still, it's a nice conversation piece to hang on a studio wall.

Hopefully, the point is an illustration of "Just because you can doesn't mean you should"
I saw a video a couple of years back where a lady assembled a Tele style body from hexagons of alternately dark and light wood.
The project came out very nice, but I always wondered about the strength of the neck joint due to the Butcherblock construction.

I remember seeing that video (assuming it was the same one).

If people maintained the integrity of the central core (neck pocket to bridge) then messing with anything else is going to be little more than aesthetics and would be unlikely to compromise the strength of the instrument. One can argue the "Tone Wood" and acoustic/harmonic properties of a composite assembly but at least it shouldn't fold in half and you could use it as a guitar.

Or, make something else. Guitars aren't especial small as a piece of "art" but making something that isn't a guitar allows much greater creative scope.

When I was in high-school wood shop (yes I know, that was many years ago, don't remind me LOL) we learned that the glued joint is typically stronger than the wood itself.

Along the grain, such as a glue-lam, yes.
But in this case, the glue joints, not unlike the pencil body, create an artificial gain pattern that runs across the regular grain structure.
A better way to handle these projects, as John suggested, is to build as an actual or simulated neck-through design.

The story continues:-

Some interesting stuff and comments relative to some of the above.

So it is a guitar, and you can play it ....whether you would actually want to, or indeed hang it around your neck?
