can someone explain with the highest detail the differences? im making a custom guitar, and i think im going to do swamp ash. the reason is becuase im going to do a natural finish, just by spraying on 3 coats of lacquer. that way, my neck will be ready to just be attached on, then my bridge can be (literally) popped on, the pickguard ready to go, and then just send it off to my electrician friend to "sew" it all up.

so can someone tell me the differences? thanks.

Excellent point brother because you can read all that you want to and NEVER really get what you're after so I'm here to help (most crap on the internet is bogus information anyways which led me to buy my Marshall JVM410H half-stack, and I can tell ya that all of those people must not know how to play at all!). Getting to the point...Swamp Ash will give you a VERY treble sound to the point of having almost no chunk at all (very high-end with very little low-end) while Alder is a perfect alternative between Swamp Ash and Mahogany (kind of the best of both worlds meaning that you still have great rhythm sound while retaining a searing high-end response). If you're a neo-classical shredder (like myself), then Swamp Ash will work just fine as there is not a whole lot of chording between crazy arpeggios and such, but even I prefer Alder to ANY other type of wood for it's BEAUTIFUL tonal characteristics. Every little idea that I recorded on my web page was done with a CHEAP (MIM) Alder bodied Straight Six Stratocaster and a ton a people seem to like the tone because I don't use ANY effects or processing at all just to get the point across. I hope this helps you to make the right decision brother, but if it were me, then I'd go for the ALDER...

there we go! thats what im looking for! the only problem, doesnt alder look like crap with just gloss? becuase im just doing a natural finish (my mom lacquers tables a lot, lmao) and i want a wood that will look good with the maple headstock.

Dude wait until I put up a pic of my Jackson Custom Shop! I'll take a pic of it right now and try to get it up here ASAP! I designed it back in 1991 and had Jackson build it for me. It has an Alder body with a Birdseye Maple neck & fretboard with a reverse headstock, all gold hardware including the original Floyd Rose trem, EMG 85 in the bridge, and an EMG SA in the neck, ect. The most appealing axe that I own to tell the truth. It's finished in a Satin (clear) finish and is COMPLETELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!! I'm on my way to my studio for pics...
