Sorry for this unnecessary comment but i wanna know the exact shade of white used by hendrix on the woodstock gtr. At a glance, it looks like olympic white, but on the closeups, it looks like an arctic/ vintage white.

PLz help im just curious.

Back then was not so great video quality.

Hendrix used a sort of relic white. It's a bit to creamy to say it's olympic white

The difference images that I've seen show it as a cream off-white or arctic white.

I'm sure he uses olympic white but because he used them consistantly they get a more creamy 'reliced' colour. I'd definitely go for an olympic white colour.

Long time Jimi fan says.....Olympic White !

Fender have built 4 Custom Shop Woodstock Strats in Olympic White.
Me think they should know.

If your finding it hard to pick the colour, go for the black. He used them just as much as an olympic white, possibly more than.

It was Olympic White, but the laquer changes the color over time.
So it depends on if you want to get one that looks like it did then or now.

I should have snuck some photos when I saw it last week at the EMP in Seattle, but your not supposed to and didn't want to get kicked out.

Exactly! The color was called Olympic White. It was the clear coats that yellowed over time. Some guitars left the factory without the clear coats, they stayed white. More than you want to know about Fender finishes may be found at this link:

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fenderc.html

Now unfortunately colors and their names can change over the course of 40 years. Fender makes a few different "whites" now, so look them over and figure out which is closest to color you really want.

Maybe watch the Hendrix Woodstock movie to see what it looked like when the guitar was a bit newer ...

Also remember the color differences between batchlots of the same color of paint.

Modern methods (i.e. computer assisted color matching,) probably result in more consiistancy from batchlot to batchlot, but back then there must have been a certain amount of variation, so i would be more concerned with finding a "white" that closely resembles the color tone you have in mind rather than tracking down the specific colour "name"

Wow, that page is longer than one of my posts! That gentleman is a little hazy on the structure of paint / lacquer in the early section (you wouldn't want to quote him too emphatically on pigments, binders and solvents), but he sure seems to know a lot about what Fender did with their finishes. Very interesting indeed: and the point that Company methodology was far from systematic is a vital one.

Orvilleowner's links are always well worth pursuing. Yet another good one.

Cheers - C

Plain & simple. He used Olympic White. Artic White is a bright White whereas Olympic White is more of a pee-white color or cream white as compared to the bright Artic White. The Artic White sticks out bright just like a sore thumb.
