Greetings all.
I've always wanted a maple neck strat. I've got a squire strat with a rosewood neck and I have an opportunity to buy a used MIM fender strat neck w/ hardware and a MIM bridge for about $170. Are they compatible? Is this going to give me a descent maple neck guitar for a low price or is it, as they say, trying to polish a turd? I'm not a pro, this would be just for playing around the house and w/ friends.

Welcome to the Forum.

My personal opinion is to just buy another Strat with a maple fretboard.

It may work or it may not. Squiers are sometimes made incompatible with other Fenders precisely to discourage this kind of thing: Fender would like you to buy a new Strat at a higher price point rather than upgrade the Squier.

So you may find that the screw holes already present in the MIM neck don't properly line up with those in the neck pocket on the Squier body. An ill fitting neck is a miserable thing - and you won't know till you've spent the money.

A better bet, if you don't want to fork out for a Fender Strat to your desired specs (or in addition to it) is just to buy a Fender licensed maple neck. Obvious makers of licensed necks are Mighty Mite and Warmoth. Sources of those necks also include www.wdmusic.com and www.stewmac.com, amongst many others.

A new neck won't be drilled for the screw holes to join it to the body, so that you make those holes yourself and get it exactly right. Of course, there won't be tuners, and sometimes no nut either. But then this is your oportunity to choose exactly the right ones of those for your desires.

Heavily modded Squier - most of us have been there at some stage or other!

Good luck - C

Exactly - You can get a used MIM std (with possibly even a quality mod or two) all set up for $250 (or so). Try to get an 06+ if you can.

Agreed. Used is the way to go. A brand new MIM is not all that bad either $399.99 (Canadian) but I've seen used from $150-$200.
