There seems to be a lot of questions lately about shielding to reduce hum... so I thought I'd throw a question out there to see if anyone has any thoughts/opinions on this idea.

I was cleaning out my garage the other day and found an old spray can of "Rust Oleum Cold galvanizing compound". The stuff is for doing touch ups on galvanized fencing. From what I've read, it is 93% pure zinc mixed with a 1 part epoxy.

Has anyone ever though of using this in the cavities? Or tried? Do you think it might work???

Thanks!!!

Thanks BSS... I've already read all of those. Just curious if zinc would work for shielding. At $8 for a spray can, it sure is a lot cheaper than the conductive shielding paint.

I've heard that CRC's Zink It works pretty good, but haven't tried it.

I guess I'll give it a try just to see if it works. A lot of electroncs companies use zinc for shielding, and I assume the epoxy will make it stick to wood.

A small can of the shielding paint from Stew-Mac will do many guitars. I have been using the same can for years and have done probably 30+ guitars with it. And still have plenty left.

I bought a $7 roll of 1/2" copper tape from Stew-Mac and it covered the entire cavity plus some of the pickguard underside.

Copper works well, without breaking the bank, aluminum foil is even cheaper. Personally, I prefer the copper (being an engineer).

FYI, when you line the cavity with the foil, you are creating a mini version of what's called a Faraday Cage. We use it in industry when we want to create a "dead" zone (no electrical interference).

This might be a really stupid question, but does shielding the pickups reduce the effect that the resonance of the body has on the guitar's tone? It seems to me like anything that's not wood would dampen the tone (hence the back plate or no back plate argument).

I would think the effect would be insignificant at most.
