ok this is a new guitar day about 2 weeks late - I original posted this on the Harmony Central forum

2006 Fender American 60th Anniversary Commemorative Stratocaster

There is a long story associated with the guitar which happen in the first week of owning it and what transpired at the 1st gig it played. It is a long story and I will tell it soon. Got it for a unbelievable price for what they go for in Australia.

Anyway the story goes - 3 members from my band play at the markets in Rozelle (Sydney) every couple of weeks. On this particular day I took the Strat to the gig (to see how it goes live). At the end of the of the first set we had just finishing playing a song by the Amazing Rhythm Acers called "what kind of love" (has a great riff in it, lot of people don't know this song but it is a killer of a tune). ok this guy comes up to me and starts talking guitars (could see he was a bit of a dropout, I am sure he suffers from a mental disorder, bit of a druggy maybe? I felt a little sorry for him) anyway we finish talking and he goes around looking at the stalls at the markets and we go on to play our second set.
Listen If everyone can hold on I am just about to take my daughter to the Zoo, so will have to come back this evening to finish the story (it is 10.25am in Sydney Sunday morning).

ok I am back from 5 hours walking around Taronga Park Zoo on Sydney Harbour with my wife, daughter and her friend from Denmark. Beautiful winters day in Sydney here is a pic looking over the zoo and harbour.

So as the story goes the gig continues and at some point I change guitars and put the strat back in its case on the side of the stage (the lid on the case is down buts the hinges/locks are not engaged.......guess what can happen if someone picks it up???). So we are into our final set and as we are playing I notice from the side of my eye a guy walking to the side of the stage -

(in the pic the guitar was on the side next to the acoustic player - this image is not
from the gig that the incident happened, just showing the weird little stage)
Image

I look around and this guys quickly grabs the case for a speedy exit - BANG! the guitar comes flying out of the case - hits the side of the stage and tumbles to the hard ground (everything going fast), the guy in all his panic grabs the guitar (not worried about the case now) and trys to take off throught the market stalls - at this stage everyone sees what's happening and a couple of the market stall owners just grab the guy and guitar. We stop playing, they bring the guy to the stage and give me back my guitar. I take a look at the guitar and WOW! - it has two big dings on the front of the body, the neck now has about 5 dings and the headstock has a nice gash out of it, apart from that it is still intact. So here is what happened, the market owner calls the police- the police rock up and ask if I want charges brought against the guy - I decide no, not if he pays $200 for the damages on the guitar (we all agreed). The guy does not have the money on him and said the most he can give is a $100 from the ATM which is in the main street the markets are in, I think $@!& it, take the $100 and be done with it (this guys seems like a junkie, maybe, maybe not) so that's what happen. Moral here is thank god it was a Fender to take a big hit and survive (played it for the rest of the set and it was fine, all I had to do was tune the D and G strings), if it was a Gibson there is no way that neck and headstock would have remained intact.
PS - the Guy is banned from the market, never to listen to our wonderful music again.
Our next gig at the markets is 13 September - so no one getting any ideas- I will be keeping the guitars very close to me.

Cool story and guitar, Schtang! Glad all turned out well, even if it did get bruised a bit. It will definitely give it personality and you'll always have the story to tell about how it got dinged. Fenders are tough little buggers, for sure.

I'm glad that you got your guitar back and that it still plays nice! Recently perchased an american mahagony strat and sounds awesome after I had my mind set on a Ibanez JS1200.

So did you get your $200? Why do people do that kind? Just makes no sense to me. Glad your git survived. I guess there is a secondary moral to your story...when you put your guitar back in there case, latch it! I narrowly averted a similar disaster, when the lid flew open as I was picking up my guitar case, luckily I caught it before it came out.

Hello Schtang,

Heck of a tale,
glad things worked out as best they could.

Best of luck with the Diamond 60th,
I got a blonde one a few months back,
57/62 nice old timey tone.
A pleasure to play.

Cheers.

Hey, was wondering if you have more info on the blonde US 60th anniversary Strats since I just got one too, but used. Want to know where they a special run for certain stores since I only thought they made the 3tone sunburst ones with the special jewel logo headstock and silver case. Is the body ash or alder since its almost a see-thru whitish/blondish finish with the wood grain partially able to be seen. Any info you have would be great and did this sell for the same price as the 3tone sunburst?

Thanks,
Ed

Hello Fendered,

Yes they were made for Sam Ash stores.
60th Anniversary "Commemorative" Stratocaster,
is the official nomiker attached to this guitar.
Blonde with rosewood fretboard.
Same genuine imitation diamond in headstock,
Same silver case w/red embroidered interior.
I was told only 100 made---Who can say?
I'm pretty sure it's an alder body.
Great playing guitar which I attribute to the
57/62 pickups. Hope this was a help.

Cheers.

Great story, glad it worked out! And agreed, only a Fender would have survived it...

I have had this guitar (white/blonde 60th ann. commemorative) since Dec of 2006. I have had the hardest time finding any reliable info on it until I checked this forum. Doing some more research, I found that there were in fact 150 made, not 100. Just thought I would share. I found this info here.

Dude, cool tale and now the Strat has the battlescarred look of a veteran.
There are some folks who pay good money for "relic'd" guitars. :D
