Hey there,

I am hoping you guys might be able to tell me abit about my guitar I have just acquired from my Father. I have no idea if it’s just been put together as a parts guitar or if it is the real thing. First thing of concern is that there is no serial number on the back. That is about the extent of my knowledge.

Thanks for helping in advance

I think it's pretty safe to say you do not have a Fender Stratocaster there.

(that was an understatement, if you hadn't noticed)

That being said, it is certainly an interesting instrument and if it were me I would hang onto it for that sake alone.
Somebody went to a lot of work and effort creating that.

It's a shame that a previous owner ruined any value by removing the original markings and replacing them with a poorly-done Fender sticker.
From the tuners, it is entirely possible that it is an Ibanez.
Those tuners were available separately in 1976, but were sold with a star rather than the Ibanez script.
But in 1976, Ibanez was still building Strats with the large CBS style headstock.
In 1979, they changed the Strat type body to the "RS" and the headstock was more like the Fender hollowbody Starcaster for both guitars and basses.
I suppose it could be a CBS style headstock cut down, but I can't find any neck-through Strat style guitars in the old Ibanez catalogs.

I suppose it could be a privately made guitar, and if so, my compliments, because they did a GREAT job. The pickguard matches the body shape. I would assume that the truss rod adjuster is in the neck pickup cavity and the anchor under the fretboard.

Personally, I would do everything I could to identify the actual origin, including contacting/tracing previous owners, and look into having the headstock markings restored.

I like it the way it is.
It is so obviously not a Fender that the decal is more of a conversation piece than anything else.
Tracing it's origin is a good idea but I wouldn't restore it.
It's way too interesting as is.
I'd like to play it and see how it sounds.
Actually, I might even like to own it .... if it is indeed playable.
The lack of any visual cues there may exist a truss-rod would be of concern to me.
Hopefully there is one and is under the guard as you speculated.

It's not a Fender, but I like it. How does it play and sound?

Agreed it's not a Fender.
I don't think Ibanez has anything to do with the guitar, either.

Maybe a Fresher, sort of like this: https://reverb.com/item/15679158-incred ... ratocaster

If that fits, there is a truss rod nut/opening under the pickguard. I've no idea about the size, or even the type of key needed…

BTW, re: the asking price on reverb, 1000$+... Makes me wonder how many ended up with garbage way back then...

Thanks jamattis.
I believe you have put the mystery to rest.
I'm satisfied that's what it is.

This Article on Fresher Guitars might be of some interest.

I think we all are. I have never heard of Freshers. Well ... let the Fresher restoration commence!
