An e-mail to Wechter GUitars was bounced back, with a "mailbox exceeds capacity" message. Apparently, they don't read them. :)

I'll see what else I can find... maybe I'll just drop in at the shop one day....

I'm willing to bet it wouldn't. A very expert fret dress the traditional way should be just about as good - but better? I doubt it.

With all due respect, a computer is programmed to react only to the paremeters within the program. It has no imagination. A human on the other had has an infinite number of options at his/her disposal; one of them even being the pleck IMHO.

Hahaha! The phrase "with all due respect" nearly always means "with no respect at all"...

There's really only one answer to this: suck it and see. We need to hear from more people who've actually had their guitars done on the PLEK.

For sure, we've heard from many here who have had fret work done by "techs" who did a less than perfect job. It sometimes seems like a little less imagination and infinite options might be a useful thing...

Cheers - C

Man can make machines that can do things within very fine tolerances that he could never do himself on a constant basis, therefore I believe that the Plek can do a better and more consistent job. Just MHO !

But on the other hand.....Explain Stradivaruis :?

Some classical string players I know have said that the "Strad" legend has become more a construct than a fact... and that many "modern" instrument sound just as good if not better...

Kind of like the whole "vintage" Strat thing.

But ask any surgeon using a CC robot about precision, and he'll tell you that Mr. Lightnin' (and others) are absolutely correct... there are many, many technical tasks in which a human's imagination is best used creating machines that can do perfectly what he can do only imperfectly. The PLEK seems to fit in this category.

I may actualy take the plunge and give my tele to charlie chandler to plek. I've done extensive fretwork to that guitar, including putting relief into the frets rather than the neck. Lets see what the plek makes of it? Lets see if it improves the tele to any noticable degree.

$100,000 for a machine, pffft it must be a tomy toy.

I may even throw a bad fret on to see what happens.

The other option is a long overdue refret on a old neck. Maybe do that and leave it to the machine to level, crown and polish.

Ofcourse i'll report back.

My frets now have a perfectly semicircular profile .

As long as there's still 0.5 mm of fret wire above the surface of the fretboard on the most worn spots of the neck they can all be reshaped.

a perfectly semircircular profile on frets 0.5mm high would make for an interesting playing experience, to say the least ...

Yes, I do wonder what happens when the frets are reaching the end of their life... I think that just means the PLEK operator will tell you that you need to replace them altogether and that no machine will save you!
