I wanted to take this opportunity to say hello. I am obviously new to this forum and am looking forward to getting smart on Fender's.

I have been back to playing for about a year now after a 25 year absence. I have never owned a Fender, but am seriously looking at adding one to my arsenal. I am not a gigging musician, only play for family and friends (I'm not good enough to be seen in public...yet), I play mainly classic rock with some blues. I am looking to increase my repertoire to include Hendrix and SRV tones. Any and all recommendations are appreciated.

Current equipment:
57 Reissue Les Paul
08 Les Paul Traditional
07 Ibanez RG550
VOX AD30VT
Dunlop Zakk Wylde Wah

Thanks

Hello Silverbusted,

Firstly welcome to this forum.

As for a Strat recommendation
there are many to choose from
at about any budget level.

Head over to every guitar shop
you know and play many,
you'll know when you get a winner

Cheers.

Thanks for the welcome. For the past year, my son and I have been going to guitar shops. While I have been gaga over Les Pauls, he has been steadily plucking away on Strats. Up until very recently, the only Fenders I have played were the examples at Guitar Center. And to be honest, very disappointed, mostly with the fretboard and how the frets are not very well dressed to the edge of the fretboard. So I assumed, wrongly I might add, that was the way American Strats were, so naturally I was turned off. Then we found a really great shop locally and virtually everyone of the Strats felt great. There are two models that I really liked, the first is the Yngwie Malmsteen and the other a 70 reissue. I particularly like the big headstock.

I am however concerned of the strength of the scalloped frets on the Yngwie Malmsteen model. Does anyone have any issues with bowing or even breakage due to the reduction of wood in the neck?

Hello Silverbusted,

I really don't want throw
a wet blanket but the
Malmsteen Strat is a unconventional
model and commands technique
somewhat contrary to standard playing.

The 70s reissue is available as
American Vintage or
Mex. Classic series
Two nice axes

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Welcome back to playing :)

I've a very young and trendy 40 (and in far better shape than most 20 yr olds), and have played since 5th grade. Was a metal head forever until I tasted the sweet kiss of the Strat. Once you go Strat, you never go back :)

Budget route: Mexican strat - great guitar and perfect for value
Have a little cash: get an American Standard, Deluxe, or higher

I've played, recorded and gigged for the last 25 yrs and a good strat will get me any tone I want. MIM's will do the job, no doubt. Americans will let you love it more. Customize any strat you already love, and you'll wish you had more time in your day to just play the damn thing:)

Glad you joined the forums. Have you tried the Highway 1 strats? Or american standards?

Those seem to be great for quality & not too hard on the wallet.

talk soon,
STS

I have not tried the Highway 1, but several American Strats. I'm still researching the different models. Fortunately, I'm in a pretty good position now to be able to afford a good one. So it will probably be an American Standard or Deluxe (as soon as I figure out the differences)

Thanks, I have been doing a lot of reading lately of the different models. Are the improvements on the 08 American Standard that much more significant over the 07's and earlier (excluding the specialty models)?

Some other might know first hand. What's been the case, is not that they're necessarily "improvements" over something that "sucked" or had problems, but new/different features to make the new model different - like most cars do from year to year. Sometimes they're cool, something they're not and you want the old back. It's most just evolution and preference. I doubt anyone could honestly say "Wow, these new little changes make it perfect now, and everything else in the past was horrible".

To me, the most notable one is not the guitar but the stellar new case.
