I just saw the supposed prices on David Gilmour’s black Strat, from davidgilmour.com, 4K for the NOS and $4,800 for the beat up looking Relic. IMHO I hate the fact that Fender has their signature series lines……this seems like a heck of a lot of money for the average individual to shuck out on a pre customized guitar. Professional musicians would never shell out this kind of money on a “clone” instrument. They have their own that they cut their teeth on. The only thing that I can do with this latest news is appreciate Fender’s efforts, to finally recognize David that is long overdue.
In all actuality Fender should donate a proceeds of the monies received on this instrument to one of David’s many charities, that would be money well spent!

But again imho what makes a guitar a guitar is what it does for the individual. Finding the right instrument takes a long time, and there are a million different factors that you have to consider before you bring the guitar that is right for you home. I don't think there is a single guitarist out there that has not done some kind of modification to their axe, from applying peace symbols stickers to changing the nut. What bothers me about this instrument is that it is too "cookie cutter" or contrived. For me it’s like an art store selling a paint brush like the one that Picasso used. Sure you can paint a beautiful picture with it, but you are never going to paint like Picasso.

So that being said, if you have 4K to 5K lying around that that you don’t know what to do with, spend the money and hang the guitar in your living room. If not, there are plenty of other quality Strats out there that will give you the same “Gilmour” sound without having to second mortgage your home.

Look at it this way and to further prove my point…..Did Gilmour have these options when he walked into Manny’s in 1970? Nope, he bought a stock strat off the rack and had fun with it. I say go with that, you and your bank account will be a lot happier!!!

Didn't Dave say that he wanted the guitar to be affordable? Or am I thinking of something else?

I believe I read that somewhere as well.

And to the OP: I understand your frustration, but did you really expect it to be any other way?

I'm not buying one, and to those that do, it's not my money they're spending. I think it looks like a cool strat, and if someone likes it enough to buy it, more power to them.

With all that said, I think Gilmour's attempts to make it "affordable" failed miserably, at least in my poor student eyes. :)

I agree I’ve never been a fan of signature guitars because playing guitar is such a personal thing to me and I don’t think I could have that connection with a signature guitar. With that said I do want those who do want to buy them to know that I am in no way saying that it is wrong to want to do so. I can completely understand the collector appeal to them. I’m wondering for that price if it is relic. If that is the case then the guitar is very affordable compared to Clapton’s Blackie or Eddies Frankenstrat

signature guitars are for those who can afford them . i really dont think David Gilmour had much input on retail pricing as he might have specs.i know that most stock guitars dont have custom shop hand wound pickups all this attention to detail is why they are special guitars and cost accordingly

I love the affordable line as well. Especially in this economy!!
I can barely make it to Guitar Center on a tank of gas;)

I know I won't be buying one for that kinda money. I've been playing Gilmour's stuff forever and haven't had a problem getting close enough to his tone with a Standard or a Deluxe. It really doesn't take a $4000 guitar to sound like Dave. Hell, look at his pedal board! His tone isn't reliant on his guitar!

Except for the Neck On switch, his strat is not all that unique. Most of his sound comes from his fingers (I love some of his clean solos the best).

You can get pretty darn close to this strat by buying a Jimmie Vaughan strat and changing out the pickgaurd and a couple of wires. Using a push/pull pot for the Neck On switch is super easy to wire as well.

Compared to what the Clapton & EVH guitars cost--that is "affordable."
But I did expect it to be less--at least a bit.

What did you think of the EVH Frankenstein Stratocaster reissues?

I was just reading the specs and this one really got me:

"black over Three-color Sunburst finish"

Are there REALLY people out there who will pay THAT much money for a guitar, and play it so much that it wears through the black to show the sunburst finish? Or is there another reason for this 2-layer finish that I am missing?

i remeber reading that. He said " i want this guitar to be a guitar that will be played and can be affordable, not a guitar that will be bought and never used"

I would be much happier if there was a non custom shop model.
