Thanks guys, some very interesting points. The pickup switching would seem to have a similar effect to Dave Gilmour’s micro switch, except this one’s variable, making it a little more versatile. It’s a great idea and one which I will keep; I never could see the point in having two tone controls anyway, full marks to the previous owner for opting to go for that configuration, presumably done when the SCN pickups were fitted.
I noticed that the 1990 and 96 standard guitars that Schtang pictured do not have the “original contoured body” decal, so I’m relieved to say that it would appear that the headstock on mine is correct for that time period.
It was only this last week that I read that fender actually applied the finish to the neck after installing the frets. This would indicate that ceri’s theory of a refret is very feasible and thus could allow moisture to penetrate the wood close to the frets. I still think that there is too much pealing of neck finish, staining around frets, corrosion around the screw holes including the back plate, rusty spring retainer (how would you get sweat around there?). Rusty tuners on front of headstock and a large area of paint missing from control cavity etc, for it to be due to just sweat. As fhopkins mentioned, once water damage gets into the wood there isn’t really anything that can be done about the staining. I wonder if I could get away with referring to the neck as being spalted maple :D

The guitars that I was refering to came out beautiful after being refinished and the greenish sections of the neck added to the oringinality and one of a kindness to the neck look. After he was done with it I tried to buy it but no go. It turned out to be a one of a kind guitar and in my opinion collectable. 8)
I could kick myself for not going down to New Orleans and going through the trash as a many a guitars were simply throwned into the trash. A lot of fine musicians were there at the time. :x
