Would I be crazy to sell my ’96 MIA Standard Strat so that I could buy a new Jimmie Vaughan Strat? I bought the MIA in the spring and just haven’t enjoyed playing it that much. I recently had it professionally setup and restrung with DR 9’s to see if I could connect with it, but I just haven’t. I have played several JV's and have liked the way they played compared to my MIA.

Thanks!

Maybe try looking into the new American Standards, compared to your older one, you might like the new one more. Im pretty sure the last time I checked, the JV Strat and the 2008 MIA were the same price.
But most of all, go and try out as many guitars as possible to the one that suites you perfectly

Good Luck!

I love the JV model Strat...This smoker comes armed with 3 Tex-Mex single-coils including an extra-hot bridge pickup, a special tinted maple V-neck shape, vintage machine heads, original synchronized tremolo, and custom tone control wiring. Alder body, Schaller straplock-ready buttons, and medium-jumbo frets. 8)

If you like the way it feels and you connect with it then buy it. I love my JV strat, but it wasn't until I played a number of different ones (most twice as expensive) that I realized how good it felt.

Has the thought of dropping some Tex Mex pups into your MIA? I realize there are other differences (particularly the V-neck). Just a thought...

But if you do unload the MIA, save the hardshell case for the JV 8)

I hope that's not crazy because I just did it a few weeks ago and haven't regretted it for a second. The MIM JV was about $400 cheaper than the MIA Standard I had purchased, and (for me, at least) the JV just blew the Standard away with regards to tone and play-ability. I dressed my JV up with a mint pg and aged plastic and set it up with Ernie Ball 10's, it's a tone monster through my Blues Jr. I love it.

Has anyone with a JV, with the vintage tuners, have/had tuning stability issues? If so does anyone have any suggestions outside of locking tuners?

If locking tuners are the only solution which would be the best to replace the vintage tuners (easiest retrofit)?

thanks.

I've only had my JV for a few weeks, but I haven't had any issues with tuning. Other than a tweak here or there, it stays in tune for me. I did a setup on my JV using Fender's suggestions, string 10's and tune down a half step, and have the trem secured with 5 springs and the claw tightened.

Thanks Greggo...I'll do a search for the Fender suggestions page(s) and work through it to see if I can get this set up just right.

If you think the JV would rekindle the vibe then go for it. I own a 2002 MIA and am not looking to trade it for any reason but if I had to, the JV would be one of my first choices.

If you are ready to change tuners, you are obviously pretty sure it is a tuner problem. I would bet your problem is in the trem or nut. I don't have the vintage tuners, but they are an upgrade -- and it is hard to fathom they don't adequately hold the string. But I don't have vintage tuners, so I wouldn't know...

a) For the nut, it is useful to lube it with graphite before setting the string into it.
b) For the trem, to keep the git in tune, I went with a 4-spring trem configuration with no float (bridge flush against the body).
c) Another more minor (compared to a & b) consideration are the saddles. I changed out my vinatge saddles for the same ones on the Am Delux. The new saddles, though, give a more modern look which some people really like (like me). But some others don't because they want the vintage Strat look. So consider that if considering new saddles and a vintage look is important to you.

Before performing the above mods, I would say my guitar stayed in tune "pretty well". But, afterward my guitar stays in tune forever (not counting trem use, of course, which I have not been using lately ... but that is another story).

Just my $0.02...

I added a 4th spring on the trem last night..effectively bringing it flush to the body, restrung it, checked the intunation, and it seems a lot better now. Thanks for the spring suggestion.

Cheers.
