So whats the deal with these two guitars?
both share most of the same characteristics (soft v neck, same neck radius, same woods) and almost all the same hardware (jv has tex mex's while the classic has 57/62's)

i believe the JV would have a little bit more gain pickup wise.

as far as mods, jv has the middle pup wide open tonewise, the classic has a neck + bridge toggle in possition 4 (instead of neck + middle)

the big question is, is it worth spending the extra 150$ on the classic player's?

im almost dead set on these two guitars in the sub 800$ price range for strats, cant make the final decision thou. i dont like jimmie vaughan (the player) tone much, but ive heard some demos of the guitar in the web and its quite alright, very similar to the classic.

anything you guys like to add?

ps: im planning on playing space rock, funk, and maybe some classic rock.

I have the classic player 50's, but at the time I didn't do my research and thought the JV was a lot more expensive and didn't even check it out.
A couple of things the Classic Player has going for it is the two point trem (with vintage style saddles) and the vintage looking, but locking tuners (LOVE them!).
The pickups in the JV are probably more desireable depending on what style you play.
I actually changed the way mine was wired because I still wanted my Neck+Middle. I added a push/pull pot to get the neck+bridge if I wanted it.

The soft V neck is just perfect in my opinion, so you can't go wrong there.

I don't have the JV, but I do have the Tex Mex pups. They are an alnico-V pup. Very versatile - I am really happy with them.

I was never really a Strat fan untill one day I picked up teh JV model and I was sold. So I decided to start doing some reasearch on this model and found it to be the best bang for the buck ($675 cdn) as it had Tex Mex pups, American wiring, a totally sweet neck and just a really nice feel to it.
I happened to drop into the music store where I first tried it a couple days ago and they had it marked down for $530 so it was a no brainer and it came home with me....
I really like this guitar...only wish it came with locking tuners... I'll put some on soon.

Jimmie Vaughan's Strat supposedely is suppose to have the Tex Mex pickups which are suppose to give a little more distortion. Well when I listened to him on a clip on this website, his pickups to me didn't sound like they distorted at all! As a matter of fact they didn't sound any different that any other Strat stock pickups. What a waste of money. You couldn't even hear any distorton in 'em as compared to the regular stock pickups. I think thats just a bunch of mumbo-jumbo anyway. However the Tex Specials are suppose to give more power and distort even more that the Tex Mex pickups. But I think this is mostly marketing hype.

Where did you get this notion from?

I love my JV strat. It has a real nice 'texas' sound sound to it as compared to the cleaner sound of my Clapton strat. Turn the gain up or use a distortion pedal and you do get some nice distortion without going overboard. It will never sound grungy, so if that's the sound you're looking for, the JV isn't it. Otherwise, it's probably the best guitar out there for the money.

For the record I am 110% satisfied with my JV....really enjoying this guitar. It's a great deal for the price...can't beat it.
