I'm a new VG Strat owner and am all about mod'ing it. I haven't found mcuh in the way of available parts or anyone even talking about it.

I have found a few places that do great work but haven't yet done anything with the VG. Sharp-Concepts is one. They'll do a custom pickguard for ~70 bucks but I have to provide them a "trace" of the pickguard or an AutoCAD formatted file. I have no idea of how to do that but I'm sure I can do the "trace" if I remove my pickguard. I would have bought a product if they already had it but I'm not sure I'm up to providing their termplate for them. They seem to do outstanding work but has anyone else dealt with them? Anyone willng to provide a "trace" or help me through the uncertainty doing this myself? I don't mind trying but I don't really know what I'm getting in to. I'm surprised that no one has already done this. Well, they probably have but I just haven't heard about it. It is really hard though to find VG mods on the web.

Anyone had experience with this? If I have someone to egg me on, I'd love to have to options for mod'ing the VG.

I think to provide a "trace" you just have to remove the pickguard, remove all the knobs, buttons, switches, pickups, whatever else happens to be attached to it, and place the blank/empty pg on a piece of paper, and trace it.

Be sure you trace ALL of the holes for screws, knobs, switches, pickups, etc...

That should be all you need. If you're not comfortable with this, most local owned guitar shops (at least the ones near me) have a company they go to for custom pick guards, and I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you out.

Why? Well, i've found that it's hard to find one guitar that does it all for you with respect to style, tone, etc., so, that's the starting off point. I also have fun customizing guitars to make them unique and reflect my personality. It's less painful and generally less expensive than tattoos. It's nice not having a guitar that looks like thousands of others. I love Strats, but I'm not crazy about the cheap white plastic knobs, trem bar and tip, etc. So that's why in a nutshell.

I'm not ready (yet) to mess with the roland electronics, but in a few years, I hope there are some hacks/mods to update that too.

Buying a couple of guitars at a couple hundred dollars a pop, and one VG Strat, at almost 2000 is cheaper than getting tattoos?

Where does that logic come from?

Well, I don't have any tattoos but I thought they were cheaper than that, but I'm still sure they're (somewhat) painful.

I'm not sure why all the sarcasm but I'm not thinking about the money issues here, I'm just excited about the new guitar. I traded a Japanese Peavey Wolfgang, and Epi Explorer and some effects pedals for it, but I know you can get a new one for $1600. I've owned and traded guitars for 25+ years and just play for fun with friends and stuff. Sorry If I've offended anyone's sensibilities in suggesting I want to change it up a bit. C'mon guys, am I the only one who likes to customize? I admit, I put a TP-6 tailpiece on my Les Paul.

Yes I could buy some cheap guitars (and I have) but I already have more of a collection than my wife likes all over the walls, so I like having this guitar and imagine some things I could do with it that I like.

I feel bad now for putting locking tuners on it already...

I did not mean to be sarcastic or rude. Sorry! I was under the impression that you had just bought the guitar of your dreams and was now wanting something else out of it. My mistake.

Thanks, I may take a peak under the pickguard and see if I'm up for it. I guess I'm somewhat afraid of having to mess with the pickups and stuff. Otherwise, it sounds very simple.

No, that's OK and I understand. I've been lurking for a few days and got a kick out of the guy (but I somewhat understand him) that wanted to turn his Strat into a shreddin' machine. I do want to mod this guitar though to better suit my style and still retain all the qualities that I love about Strats.

I'm a tinkerer, but I don't specialize in guitar tinkering. That's why I'm not against messing with the electronics either. I appreciate Fender's decision to keep it simple, and I love what they and Roland have done. But, I would love to find a way down the road to find an upgrade path to allow for open E tuning and stuff like that. They did so good it leaves me wanting for more!

Actually what exact mods do you want to do to your Strat dude? Give me some examples and I'm sure that I can walk you through it without a hitch. Oh and by the way, my Strat is a Shreddin machine because I'm the one playing it just like all of my other axes that I play man. Just check out my www. button and you'll see there. I don't need effects or low action or anything like that to be clean and fast, it'd just be nice to add some little features like a floyd that all of my Jacksons have had in the past or a few more frets, but I am growing fonder of the standard trem that the Straight Six comes with :D . I'm kind of getting the feeling that that's where you're coming from as well. Are you really a "Shredder" or do you just like the style? A TON of people claim to be shredders without anything to back it up like actual audio of just a single guitar track with NO EFFECTS so you can hear EVERY pick and mistake (if there are any) and do it with one take only like Yngwie does.

Like I said before, what exactly do you want to mod man? Tell me and I'll gladly help you out bro with instruction and even pictures if necessary...

NO DUDE!! I can't do the word shreddin' justice but I love the style very much, among other styles like Gilmour, Knopfler, etc. I'll check out your link soon. Right now, I'm cramming on some Testament, Heaven and Hell and Priest getting ready for the Masters of Metal tour Thursday in VA. Actually, I'm making my wife cram so she'll recognize some songs by Testament!

Thanks for offer to help. I've put on some locking tuners. I was thinking about the tremsetter but honestly, after the locking tuners, it stays in tune pretty well, but I don't use the trem that much, or hard. Mostly, I'd like to replace the pickguard with something dark gray or black. I found some real cool pg's but of course if I replce that, i need to deal with the knobs and pup covers. So, if i can't find suitable replacements for those, i want to hold off on the pg. Now I've done some stupid things in the past like my own painting of things but I'm probably not quite ready to desicrate my new baby with that yet. So, right now, I'm just looking and thinking about making a trace of the pg to send in. I'll let you know when I can use some help though. Thanks!
