I've found some late 1979-1981 Fender Strats with the "International Colors" on eBay recently, and I've become interested in that color series, being a painter and artist for a private skateboard graphics operation myself. Does anybody have any information about the International Color Series guitars? Any information is greatly appreciated.

From memory I think we are talking about solid yellow, solid orange - and a couple of others, is that right? Possibly with black knobs and pickup covers?

I seem to recall that was a color scheme Fender produced for the European market for a short time. Not popular: quickly dropped.

Or am I mixing this up with something else?

The 1981 International Colors were: Arctic White, Morocco Red, Monaco Yellow, Maui Blue, Capri Orange, Sahara Taupe and Cathay Ebony

according to http://www.strat-central.com/cbs80s.htm

Some people think they go back to 1979, but that's because Fender was still using "S9" serial numbers. Demand had dropped off and the serial number decals weren't being used up!

Magnificent! One day we'll find a question Orvilleowner doesn't know the answer to - but it hasn't happened yet! Nice work.

In the picture (on that linked site) the Maui Blue looks quite nice. But I wouldn't trust the colors in those pictures too much: the orange one below it also looks all right, almost Shell Pink, but I remember that one from real life and it was seriously garish and horrible.

Did Cathay Ebony actually mean black, do you think?

Cheers - C

Thanks, Ceri.

I am just less afraid to use Google, I guess.
