Barry & Bear,

Thanks much. :D I love it! The tones are so sweet. These alnico 3 pups have both fullenss and bell tone. It is a great axe.

Thanks ernie! :P I have seen many Highway One Strats with a grayish washed out colour. This one was different. It was more of a solid light blue. Maybe I was lucky to get a hold of this one (it is from 2006). I love the colour very much.

Thanks again.

CHEERS :!:

Well...it already started to happen! Where my arm rests was starting to get buffed. Hummmm...I got some fine buffing compound from StewMac that I used on my Les Paul DC TV Special, so why not?

Thank you! I love it!

I'm working on converting it to SSS with my custom "Maxistrat" S-1 and two pull-pot circuit. I already changed the middle pup to non-RW/RP, which improved the pos 2 & 4 combos. This next version will give me 10 usefull combos and 4 tone options. Details to follow when I get her done.

Hi Phil, I tried 5 springs and it didn't seem to do much. I then installed an LSR nut which cured the problem, not sure if it will help you or not.

firefighter,

Me too. 5 springs. No real help. I lubed all the contact points. Still not 100%. That 3rd string goes sharp every time I use the trem. Drives me nuts. I think locking tuners and the LSR are needed. If THAT doesn't do it, then I'm going to install the Deluxe two-point trem.

I had this guitar for three days and I could dive bomb from here to Van Halen without going out of tune! I want that action on my Daphne. This was such a well made guitar, but it did not have the full sound my HW1 has. I do not think the pickups were the only reason, otherwise I think I would have kept it. Hey...if I had the extra $$$, I would have kept it. It was so purdee!

The latest in the life of my Strat...

Image

She is now SSS. This is still work in progress, but I can say that the Alnico 3 in the bridge is much better for Strat type sounds. The HSS with the Atomic in split (single) coil mode was too nasal to sound good in positions 4 and 5. The hummie was a good hummie though! Still, the single coil A3 with the Greasbucket tone turned just under 3 sounds d@mn fine and is very convincing as a humbucker sound. All it needs is a little more gain on the volume control. Now I can have my cake and eat it too!

The pull pots were temp configed for adding Neck/Bridge and Neck/Mid/Bridge to pos 4 & 5 or optionally 1 & 2 depending on which tone you pull. When I get the S-1 and 5-way 'superswitch', I will make EVERY combo available...And I mean EVERY!

As far as mechanics go, the GERMAN MADE Schaller locking tuners (direct replacement) are on the way. I am also ordering a Wilkinson VWP6SB in chrome to fix the tuning issues. I have the Fender LSR roller nut now, but this will require some routing work to install. I will do these mods as soon as all the parts are here. This will be one MAXED-OUT Strat when I'm done. Right now it sounds SO GOOD. I really think the Highway One Strats have the best Strat tone I have heard. Fender might want to considder a special version of the Alnico 3 done in humbucker config so coil splitting sounds the same as a single A3. They might want to considder a "Deluxe" version that would amount to all the mods I'm doing. If they made it in Daphne Blue, I would have bought it at twice the price!

Phil, looks great! I'm trying to narrow my choice down to one strat (jeez, they make so many versions!) I think my top choice is a SSS Daphne blue HWY1. I love the color on the 60's classic strats, but not a huge fan of the matte finish on the HWY1's...at least in pics. Yours, after buffing it out, looks great! Do you think the color looks about the same as the 60's classic now that it's shiny?

Thanks!
Pat

Hi Pat,

Sorry I could not get back sooner. The forum time is hard to deal with.

Highway One guitars buff out to a nice gloss. What matters is the sound. Try the two and tell me what you think sounds better. I could not put the HWY 1 down after one listen. True...I did not like the color of the SSS I tried in NY. It was a very pale gray type of blue, but when I saw this one, it really looked darker and a better shade of blue. You may have to hunt for the same.

To me, it has to play good and have the right neck profile for my hands. That is very important to me. The wood has to sound good...Then it has to sound good plugged into my system. This Strat met every condition except the hardware...which I am improving on now. I just got the locking tuners and am installing them at this time. But let me tell you that the thin skin Nitro finish and the pickups kick major $@!! And it plays like a dream after a proper setup. I think you will love this guitar. Too bad the regular SSS comes with white knobs and pickup covers. The black looks so cool!

Good luck!!!
