 I'm going to be buying a 2008 American Deluxe Stratocaster in the next couple of weeks. Still looking at FMT HSS, HSS, & SSS models. One thing I'm confused about is this: The Amer. Deluxe Strat. HSS is listed as having DH-1 (Bridge), SCN (Middle), and Hot SCN (Neck), while the American Deluxe Strat. FMT HSS is described as DH-1 (Bridge), Hot SCN (Middle), Hot SCN (Neck). Why does one have one hot SCN and the other two hot SCN's? Fender states they are balancing the bridge humbucker with the other pickups by using the hot SCN's. My question is what differences can I expect from a Hot SCN vs. a regular SCN in tonality or output? I assume the hot one has a greater output, but I've also read that hotter pickups sometimes decrease the middle or higher frequencies, so can be less bright/bell-like.

Also, what do people think about the single tone control setup on the Amer. Deluxe FMT HSS, any folks with experience with this guitar's setup?

I wasn't really considering the FMT HSS until I noticed the two hot SCN pickups (an advantage of HSS?), and the facts it comes with a Deluxe Hardshell Case and an Ebony fingerboard. Any experience with the ebony finger board on strats out there? Also, the FMT HSS has no pickguard, which I'm a little leary about, however, it lets that beautiful flame maple top show! Any thoughts about no pickguard?

OK, geeze, that's a lot more questions than I thought I had; don't feel obligated to respond to all of them.....

Read to the right of the image of the deluxe HSS on this page:
http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... 0101500764
It says this:
"The two Samarium Cobalt Noiseless™ pickups (neck and middle) are wound extra-hot for proper balance with the humbucking pickup."
I believe that when u click the specs button, there is a typo.
I have sent Brad Traweek (forum admin) an email to confirm, but I'm pretty sure about this.
So both singles are 'hot' scn's in the neck & middle.

The main difference should be a little more output. (only enough to balance though)
I am sure Fender spent some pain staking hours getting the
sound/EQing just right on the hotter pickups.
Besides, the pickups that get the frequency loss that u fear
are alot hotter than these I think.

I certainly thought they sounded very Strat like...
I pick my new strat up this week!

I'm being very dumb. Can anyone point me towards the QMT and FMT Strats on this site? They exist - but I can't find them.

Far as I recall, the FMT is available in the HH configuration that someone was asking about recently...

Cheers - C

You can click them from here:
http://www.fender.com/products//search. ... icandeluxe
That's just like clicking American Deluxe from the left nav.

Thanks, man: how did I miss that? D'UH!

Which answers the question I had: do Fender still do an HH version of those guitars? No, it seems not.

Sorry, ThatGuitarGuyAL...

The specs on the HSS were incorrect -- it and the FMT HSS both have two hot SCN's. Specs are being corrected as we speak. Thanks to bss for sending this to my attention.

Thanks to "bss" and Fender's Brad Traweek, Manager of Web Development, for correcting the Fender web site. The American Deluxe HSS and FMT HSS both have two Hot SCN's and one DH-1 humbucher at the bridge.

I haven't been able to find one of the FMT HSS Strats to try out the single tone control. Anybody have a feel for how it works? I understand it controls all pickups that are active, is that right?

Yes, it is like a master tone knob that effects everything is my understanding.
Also, I love the ebony fretboard.
When u play a note, u r actually putting your finger on the fretboard.
So the feel under your finger is string & wood (fretboard).
It is alot like a maple fretboard because its so smooth...
It's like like skating barefoot on smooth glass! Very nice, very worth it!

I have always loved the ebony fingerboard on my D-28 Martin, and higher quality acoustic guitars usually use ebony. I like the maple fingerboards more than rosewood on many strats, but I am concerned if the finish on the maple fingerboards will make re-fretting more difficult, like with chipping of the finish on the fingerboard.

Anybody have experience with re-fretting maple necks with finishes on them?

No not me... I found this page where someone refretted a maple neck.
