So my mum got me a strat, I had been talking about getting one and she went ahead and bought me one for christmas. Sweet deal.
Anyway I got it and I check the neck serial for the date and it's 2002. But it has two string trees which I believe weren't on the 2002 american series (the shop sold it as american standard but I think they're more or less the same right?). There is a gap between the top of the body and the overlap of the neck by about 3mm (not sure if usual) and the pickguard above the neck pickup is sort of bowed and pushing it makes the pickup move up and down.

I take off the neck and find the body dated 1989 with a big red A and the neck dated 2002. Hmm.. so it does have a 'dink' on the side of the body where it looks like it has been dropped so I'm wondering did the neck get badly damaged and they've replaced it and not informed the shop when trading it in.

The neck has microtilt and it looks to be properly installed. As in not just a plate with a hole for microtilt. Also a 2 screw trem whammy bar bridge thing.

Also a 2002 owners manual came with it and it looks like an original tweed case.

Anyway I'll post some pics and any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to decide whether to keep it or send it back or ask for some money back.

Let's start over...

Posting pics straight on the forum will ignite more answers than clicking links will. Copy the image address (the one starting "https" and ending "jpg"), and use the forum's IMG-command, like this:

On the ID'ing part, have you checked the serial number here: https://www.fender.com/product-registra ... ial-search
At the moment, I'm thinking (just a vague guess, though) a 2002 body with a 1989 neck; all legit but not original.

You are absolutely correct because many people don't trust where that link will take them. It is as if the Fender forum needs a warning when creating threads saying "Did you post your pics directly to the thread and not link them?" or something ...

Looks like the frets could do with being dressed

Yep American but more than likely the neck is from a different guitar.
The body looks American series/std.
The neck part number is for a highway one so you've been misled.
Does the serial search come up with a color? :D

Yep, it is very nice, and I love the black-on-black.
Being a "Partscaster" I hope Mum didn't overpay for it, but it does appear to be actual Fender parts.
Perhaps the neck was replaced because of damage, or it was so well-played that it needed a refret and the new neck was cheaper.
Knowing the story would be cool.
