Hi All,

New here so hello to all and apologies for another which, or rather opinions on, a new (to me) guitar question.

After years of faffing around at playing the guitar I've decided in my mid-forties it's time to get serious. Have some lessons and try and get beyond very simple stuff. I've been playing a travel electric and an acoustic for years but its time for a proper electric guitar. The sounds I like are SRV, Hendrix, early Clapton as well as John Frusciante and Mike McCready etc.

I'm fortunate that I have a reasonable budget of £1000 for my guitar but no big guitar shops locally. The guitars listed are the three I have narrowed it down to from eBay and Facebook:

1) '88 Plus in gunmetal green. A well looked after but certainly fairly well played guitar. This was the guitar on the top row when I bought my Squire strat back in '89, so the look has a sentimental value to me (stupid I know) £995

2) '04 USA Std in Chrome Blue. Best looking of the three to my eye but arguably having the least impressive pick-ups. Very, very good, hardly used condition. £895

3) '17 USA Elite in Sky Burst. Mint. Has locking tuners which I like the idea of. £1100

They are all within a couple of hundred pounds of each other. I haven't viewed them yet but will be this week. My playing and ear are not good enough yet to probably tell much difference in sound between them (or will I?). I also can't take someone with me to play and listen to, as I'm going to view these while on a work trip.

So, any thoughts comments, advice would be greatly appreciated. Quality, best pick-ups etc. I know that the best one is the one I like playing the most but if I can't tell a difference I'm looking for something else to go on.

Many thanks in advance.

Mike.

Well, I've always like the Strat Plus, and it has locking tuners as well. Just like to get them a little cheaper. I bought a couple in the last few weeks.
Too bad you don't live around here, there's a few in the $700-850 US dollar range.

Well truss rod adjust aside I would lean towards the latest elite.
Less likely to have issues in terms of fret ware and has the compound radius which to me is a plus.
Those others seem overpriced.

Thanks Jason and Jimmy.

As it happens a very nice Plus came my way. Very good condition, nearly mint, for £650. I'm delighted with it.

Not sure if the colour is pewter or pearl black burst but it's lovely.

Bring on the lessons.....

Cheers.
