Would anyone see any issues with putting a 2018 (Gen 3, USA) YJM Strat neck on a 2001 Gen 2 YJM Strat body? The only difference in the 2018 neck is the brass dowels in the neck to receive the steel machine screws vs. the standard wood screw holes in the 2001; a bullet truss nut in the headstock vs. the walnut plug type in the 2001; deeper scallops and bigger frets. The radii are the same. I’m sure it might seem funny that I’d question drop-in compatibility but I don’t want to assume anything.
Thanks!

You're a very knowledgeable YJM owner. Unless someone else has actually done that particular swap, chances are you know more about it than any of us do.

So I can't say absolutely for sure that it would work.

But I'd bet money that it will be fine. Except for the screw placement on contoured heels and 3-bolt necks, pretty much all USA Strat necks are directly interchangeable. (Warmoth lists a few exceptions but none of them apply to YJM's.)

With any swap, the neck pocket might be a little too tight for a different neck, and might require sanding the sidewalls of the pocket to remove a little of the finish. (Bad thing is if you ever put the original neck back on, the gap will now be bigger.)

Conversely, it might be a little large and result in a gap. Purely cosmetic, and lots of Fenders leave the factory with neck gaps.

The bolts for the brass inserts might possibly be larger diameter than normal screws, and bind in the holes in the different body. They should push through easily without a screwdriver. If not, open the holes a little with a needle file. (Won't hurt anything if you ever put the original neck back on.)

You had another thread about wanting a YJM that has all your favorite features from the different generations. My first thought was "mix and match".

If you're mixing parts from guitars you own (instead of buying individual parts), the only problem is that you'll have one "perfect" YJM plus another one with all the "wrong" features.

But I'd find that more enjoyable than not being entirely satisfied with either YJM.

Thanks! I didn’t want to assume I would think of all possible issues, and your points illustrate why. I was thinking limitedly, just the overall fit, and not the smaller things that have to work together. The neck pocket size and the screw holes issues didn’t occur to me, as obvious as they are. And opening up the body holes is one possibility but it made me realize I don’t think the neck I’m looking at comes with mounting screws; so I’m sure the original wood bolts won’t work with the threaded stud inserts in the neck—I’d have to buy the proper bolts if not. I have a couple of gen 3 yjms so I could test one of those necks and get an approximation of how the purchased neck would work, assuming good standardized production across those gen 3 necks.
Thanks again!

That’s funny... I have four YJM strats, but no spare necks. And I just checked eBay and the neck I was looking at is no longer listed. That sucks cause it was a complete rosewood neck with all hardware and unplayed for the same price as USA YJMs without hardware.
Arrggggh
