I found a Fender Stratocaster in a pawn shop today. I didnt have the cash so of course I didnt buy and even if I did. There was something odd about it. It seemed real but I was only there to look for a few minutes and I dont know much about identifying guitars. It was solid for the most part. I took a quick picture. What was weird was the way stratocaster was written. I had never seen it like that. Could anyone tell me what i was looking at? Image

Hi,

Google doesn't allow hotlinking.

Try uploading the picture using a 3rd party host such as Photobucket, Flickr, ImageShack or Imgur.

Even weirder is the lack of a Fender logo before the Stratocaster script
From the single photo you've got I'd be inclined to say it's not the real deal.
How much did they want for it?

If the picture stratmangler has posted is the picture you took...it is a bad example of a photo as it pertains to the topic of this thread. You want us to identify the Logo on the headstock, yet you didn't take a photo of the headstock (can barely see it).

I've seen Japanese Strats that write out "Stratocaster" real big like that...but it also has 'Fender' written much smaller (and in gold) above it.
However; I've also seen fake Strat copies sold in big department stores with Stratocaster written big and bold...with no 'Fender' logo above it.

If 'Fender' is missing from the Logo...it is most likely fake.

P.S.- Regardless...in both cases (Japanese real deal, or Sears fake)...I've never seen either STOCK with a pearloid pickgaurd. So at the very least, I'd be inclined to believe that has been changed.

P.P.S.- I predict someone on here will ask for a look at the insides. Or atleast a straight on shot of the headstock.

Not to be confused with the 40 year old (and current, though Chinese-made) Starcaster
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Starcaster

Here's the story on them:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starcaster_by_Fender
Short story... it's a student model that was sold around 10 years ago.
Looks like your sample is a metallic black, rosewood, and pearloid PG, which pegs it as one sold by Sam's Club according to the Wiki article.

Nothing special, but I don't think I'd stoop so far as to call it "junk"... it is what it is and if you are thinking about learning to play, it is a great way to start on a budget... as long as they don't want too much for it.
Keep in mind that a brand new Squier Affinity, which would be comparable quality, is only $200 MSRP and can occasionally be found on sale for $180.
The weak point on student models is generally the electronics.
Personally, I would not pay more than $100 for it unless the finish is absolutely clean and the pots and switch are not scratchy.

The other guitar player, Tom Thomas, played an original Starcaster back in the 70's in a band I played in called MADDOG.
