I have had both the tex mex and the 57/62s.
If you are after that typical strat tone the 57/62s are a better option IMHO.
Each to their own of course and the mex are still nice pus. :D

I concur.

When played through a contemporary Fender amp they may seem a bit bland but when played through a Leo Fender designed amp there is real mojo to be heard and savored. They're at their best through a Vibroverb or Pro Reverb.

It was a tough choice just going by YouTube videos. Thanks for the real world opinion. What pushed me to the Tex-Mex was that liked the idea of the slightly overwound pick up. I may have to grab some 57/62s even if I like the Tex-Mex.

If I get a set of 57/62s, do you have any thoughts on keeping the Tex-Mex in the bridge?

The Tex-Mex bridge pickup is significantly hotter than that found in the 57/62 set -- 7.4KΩ v 5.6KΩ. I would think it would work well but with the caveat that the pickup be used in conjunction with the lower tone control to tame the brightness (when necessary). Adding a single jumper wire to the pickup selector will make this easily possible.

That is a great idea. Thanks!

Fat 50s are nice and bright and spanky without being too terribly bright.
TexMex are alright as well but not my faves.
I've become a strong advocate for a hybrid pup I tried about a year and a half ago or so.
Like a cross between a Strat style single coil and a P90 style single coil but in the size and shape of a Strat pup and designed to fit in a Strat.
It's a very compelling tone and I like the screw-top magnets that make it so easy to manage string balance.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The thing to watch for with Poplar....according to my understanding of it.......is that Poplar does not handle impact very well. It tends to 'crush' rather than dent.

I have a USA made Fender Nashville B-Bender Tele that has a Poplar body. The one I played at GC had some nasty injuries. The salesman told me the incidents weren't all that bad either....compared to what the damage looked like. I had them order me a new one which the factory took care of. Of course the B-Bender was a joke....so I sent the guitar to Gene Parson's and he adjusted it, set it up properly and did his "Long-something or other" modification which gave the bender an awesome feel.

As for Strat pups. I have a MIM Strat I was traded recently. It has the 57/62 Custom Shop pickups and it sounds phenomenal. Very, very close to my 1964 Strat, which I have had since 1970. It's great because I can leave the '64 at home and take the MIM to gigs. It plays absolutely superbly.

Just got the guitar a few hours ago. It has taken this long to get to clean off the funk and good knows what else from the poor thing.

It feels much lighter than telecaster. Comparing the fret wire to the telecaster that I know has medium jumbo, that doesn't seem like what is on the 2003 Stratocaster.

Hopefully the parts I ordered will start arriving soon. Thanks to all of you for your help and information. With it I hope to create a guitar that is perfect for me.
